Rules, Procedures, and Grading Policies. Parents and Students, I am so excited about teaching Science to you this year. Science is truly something that I love; I hope you will too very soon. As a matter of fact, my goal is to show you how fun, easy and interesting Science can be. First, I want to tell you a few things that you will need to know in order to be successful in Science this year. We will go over this in class, however, it is important to read this, and keep it in your Science binder to refer back to. o Quizzes, lab grades, homework, crosswords count once and tests and projects count twice. To average this yourself, simply add all of the grades together counting the tests and projects twice, and then divide by the number of grades. This will give you your six weeks average. o Midterm and final exams count as 1/7th of your yearly average. This is as much as a six weeks grade. o Quizzes will be given randomly throughout the week. We will have a minimum of two a week on the material we are studying. These quizzes will be 3 to 5 questions each. o Bellwork will be given each day. This will consist of three to five questions that pertain to the topic we are currently talking about. They will use the first five minutes of each class to work on this. They will then turn in the work when finished. Each one counts 20 points. I will grade them once every week, giving them 100 possible points. This usually helps their grade over the six weeks time. o Tests will be given on Thursday, unless something unforeseen comes up in which case we will test the following day. Notes will be given before each test. If you study the notes, you will make a good grade. All test and quizzes are made from the notes; however, you will be required to explain answers. It will not be a matter of reciting notes, and then forgetting it after the test. You will have to think about your answers…..you will have to think in this class!!! o If you are absent, you should know what you missed due to our regular schedule. Notes will be provided online. If you do not have a computer, get the notes from another student or ask me for them. You must complete your work within 3 days of your arrival back to school. If you are absent several days in a row, you will be allowed more time. o If you are present at the time an assignment is due, and do not turn it in, it is a zero that day. If you do not turn in homework on time, it is a zero as well. This is a school wide policy. o Planners and binders will be checked often to make sure you are organized and have all assignments written down. This will be a homework grade. o Binders should have dividers labeled and in this order: Calendar (on top, no divider), grades (notebook paper to write down grades), Homework assignments, daily work, notes, tests. Binders will be check for this on a random basis. o Extra credit will not be given, however, if I see academic excellence such as 100 on a quiz or test, the student may receive a ticket. A ticket may be given to a student may redeem the ticket at anytime on any daily grade. It must be stapled to the paper in order to receive credit. They may use the tickets one at a time, or all at once. If the student looses the ticket it may not be redeemed or replaced. o Bonus questions will be available on the tests and will most likely come from previously taught standards in this class. This is so that the information stays fresh in your mind.
When we have lab, groups will be assigned, given a station, and will remain together the entire year. Everyone in the group will have a job such as recorder, materials person, etc. Everyone will receive an individual grade on these activities according to the amount of effort out into it. o You will be expected to be polite and kind to everyone in the classroom. Use your manners to the teacher and the other students. Shouting out or talking out of turn will not be allowed due to respect for others. This will earn you a check mark. o You must raise your hand quietly if you need assistance or have a question. o If you need help on your work, I will come to you; therefore you may stay in your seat. o Most of the science equipment is breakable, therefore you must be careful. When doing labs, you must listen carefully for all instructions before touching anything. This is for your safety. o You must bring all the materials needed to class such as a book, paper, pencil, library book (If you complete your assignment early). You will not be allowed to leave the room once the bell has rung. This also goes for study hall. o The bell does not dismiss you, the teacher does. o You will not enter the room until I open the door. You will line up single file in the hallway and wait for me. Beating on the door will result in a check mark. If my door is shut, I am still finishing up class, interrupting me only takes me longer to finish. o During discussions, I will call on you randomly. If someone has a question, you may raise your hand; otherwise I will randomly and equally call on students. This does not mean that everyone will be called on in every class. o When I am out of the room or we have a visitor, it is business as usual. You are to act no differently regardless of who is in the room. The rules still apply. o Students, your nightly homework is to spend at least 15 minutes studying your Science notes. You must be ready for quizzes and discussion everyday of the week. You will fail quickly if you do not study in this class.
