Reading Class

MRS. FAULKNER’S READING CLASS

My goal for you this year is to improve your reading skills overall this year. One major way you will do that is by reading books that you are interested in reading( image that!). You will be responsible for a novel grade each six weeks. This grade counts 3 times each six weeks. Each book you read will be worth a certain amount of points based on the difficulty level, print size, and length of the book.

As a guideline, please use this:

  • Every 100 pages is usually worth 15 points if it is on 7/8th grade reading level.
  • If it is on a lower level the book will be less for each 100 pages (points will vary according to the book)

(These points apply to every 100 pages)

    • 4th grade level book: 5 points
    • 5th grade level book: 8 points
    • 6th grade level book:10 points
    • 9th/10th grade level book 20 points
    • Above 11th grade-25 points

So, a 7/8th grade level book that is 200 pages is worth 30 points.

Students will gain points each time they read a book, fill out the novel worksheet as they read the book, and give an oral report to the teacher. They may earn up to 100 points each six weeks. If they earn more than 100 points, those points will rollover to the next six weeks. It is very important that they fill out the novel worksheet as they read the book.

Students can find the book level on the front of the book if they check it out on the school library. Students may read books from home, the school library, the public library, or books I have in the classroom (a limited amount). The books must be appropriate for school.

Other grades will come from daily grades and tests from stories we read in class, reading skills learned through the year, and bellwork each day. All grades will be written on the 15 day report along with the current amount of novel points so far for the six weeks.
