Check your child's agenda every night for specific homework assignments! Don't forget to sign and return agenda each day. Phonics: Phonics teaches beginning readers the phonetic (or spoken) value of letters, letter combinations, and syllables. Reading is learned most easily when taught in a systematic way. Saxon Phonics presents information in small, easily understandable bits and reviews daily. New learning gradually builds upon old learning, and regular practice reinforces both. You can help your child in several ways. First, review your child's schoolwork every day and ask what he/she learned. This will reinforce the concepts taught. Second, on the back of each worksheet is homework that reviews both new and previously learned information. Please help your child complete this homework and have him/her practice reading the worksheets, readers, and other materials sent home. Homework and practice materials will include any needed directions. Listen attentively as your child reads, helping him/her sound out difficult words as needed, and encourage your child to read the various forms of punctuation with proper expression in his/her voice. Finally, read your child the comprehension question in the back of the readers, and help him/her answer them, if necessary. Additional information may be sent home to help you participate in your child's learning. Second graders are expected to know how to read, so it is important that your child learn how to read this year. READING: Your child will be assigned a basal reader. On Monday, he/she will receive a new set of VOCABULARY WORDS. Study these words every night. A VOCABULARY TEST (students read words to teacher) will be given at the end of each week. Your child will also be responsible for reading the assigned story of the week. Don't Panic!!! I know this will be difficult for some students. Read with your child, helping him/her with any words he/she cannot call. Discuss the pictures and talk about what happens in the story. A Reading Assessment will be given each Thursday. I will begin the year reading everything for the students. As the year progresses, students will be able to read the test independently. SPELLING: We will begin Spelling the first week of September (after Phonics Lesson 15). Your child will be given a Spelling List every Monday. We will practice spelling the words each day in class and activities will be given to assist your child in learning to spell the words. We will have a practice test on Thursday. The "real" test will be given on Friday. (If your child makes a 100 on Thursday, he/she does not have to re-take it Friday.) MATH: We will complete Side A of each Math worksheet together in class. Side B will be Homework. Let your child do everything he/she can do by him/herself. Read directions, as needed, for your child. Your child will also have to learn basic math facts. I will send home flashcards as I introduce facts. STUDY! STUDY! STUDY! We will have a timed test on these facts daily.
