GRADING
Much of the work your child will complete throughout the school year will be
practice and review work. This work will be filed in the “take/leave at home”
pocket of the daily folder. Much of this work will be checked and discussed
in class. If your child seems to be making several mistakes, please review
or have your child correct the activity. Keeping a close check on daily work
will allow you stay involved in what your child is doing and learning, and if
necessary, provide the extra help and guidance your child may need at home.
This work will not have a grade on it, nor will it count as a grade. It will
show the number missed if any at the top of the page.
On Wednesdays your child will bring home a stapled stack of papers containing
all of the graded work for the previous week. I will need for you to sign the
top paper and return the stack by Friday. The papers will be marked with a
number grade and a letter grade according to the Milan Special School
District’s grading scale. These are the grades that will be used to attain a
six weeks average for the report card. Please review these papers with your
child. Grades will only be taken on work in which your child has had ample
learning time and practice to master the skills or concepts. If it is obvious
from the grades and notations on the paper that your child is having some
problems, it would be very helpful and beneficial to give your child some
extra help at home as many future skills and concepts build upon those
previously taught. Grades may also be given for completion and correctness of
homework assignments, activities, and projects.
HOMEWORK
Homework is a part of the practice and review process necessary to master
skills and concepts that will eventually be tested. It is important that your
child complete homework on time. Every effort will be made to keep homework at
a minimum amount. Most of the time, homework will consist practicing Math
facts, practicing story word list, reading our Reading story for the week,
and studying Spelling words for the week. We will spend a great deal of time
at the beginning of the school year learning about organizational tools and
use of wise study habits. All assignments should be recorded by your child in
his/her agenda daily. The assignments will be reviewed, posted, and time set
aside to record these in the agenda. Every effort will be made throughout the
day and at the end of the day to ensure that your child has the materials
he/she needs to complete assignments. I will expect your child to assume some
responsibility for getting home with the materials needed to complete
assignments. Please send a note if special circumstances occur that keep your
child from being prepared for class.
A great deal of time will be spent reviewing the policies and procedures at
the beginning of school. Please have your child review these with you. You
make keep this page for future reference. Please sign and return the
attached form.
Thanks so much for your help and cooperation,
Mrs. Lisa Harris
