As a lover of learning and an avid reader, I strive to inspire those same
passions in the children I teach daily. I have taught a variety of grade
levels and found that my love is most certainly in First Grade. I am always
just as thrilled as my students are when they discover the joy of new
learning.
The rest of this page will tell you a little bit about myself. I am sure
that somehow throughout this page, we will find a connection with one
another!
FAMILY:
I was born and raised in Milan and graduated from Milan High School in
1982. My dad and his wife, Don and Janet Gibson, live in Medina. Daddy
is enjoying the life of "retirement" and is persuaded quite often to build
special things for our classroom. My mother, Linda Gibson, passed away when
I was in high school. She spent the last few years of her life working with
handicapped children in the Milan schools. I think she instilled in me the
love of children and learning. I have one brother, Steve Gibson. He lives
in Milan with his wife, Carol. They have 2 children, Colton and Chelsea.
Colton is a 2007 MHS graduate and has a son, Carter. Chelsea graduated from
MHS and is attending UTM. She married Chris Quinn this summer. Steve's
older daughters are Tiffanie Kyle and Natalie Gibson. Tiffanie is married to
Isaiah and they have two beautiful daughters, Gracie and Faith. Natalie
lives in Jackson and works at the hospital.
I have been married for 27 years to Don McCurley....the one true love of my
life! We met at Bethel College and married about a year after we began
dating. Don teaches at Milan High School and also pastors the Concord
Cumberland Presbyterian Church near Milan. We have three children, Lindee,
Lacee (twins) and Dalton. Lindee is a UTM graduate with a degree
in Business Management Computer Information Systems. She is employed by UTM
as a Resident Director at Browning Hall. Lacee graduated from
Bethel University with a degree in nursing. Lacee married Rob Harris May
24, 2008. They live in Humboldt. Rob pastors the Humboldt CP
Church and Lacee is a Registered Nurse at Jackson Madison County General
Hospital. Dalton graduated from Milan High School in 2010. He is a
Sophomore at UTM majoring in Agriculture. He's an avid hunter, fisherman,
and loves trap shooting. Our little house is much quieter now and Don and I
are adjusting to having an "empty nest". I love spending time with my family
and friends.
HOBBIES:
I love to read! I read magazines, cookbooks, newspapers, and of course,
books, books, books! I love to collect cookbooks..my favorites are
the Gooseberry Patch cookbooks. I love celebrating all of the
holidays...Christmas is my favorite! I usually have a tree in every room of
my house and I constantly look for ornaments. My other passion is people -
I enjoy my "quiet" times but I usually am the happiest when I'm surrounded
by the people I love! I love working on the website, cooking and
entertaining, watching my favorite TV shows and QVC (my husband calls it
the "devil's work") and finding time to create special moments for my
family.
Most of all, I love teaching and watching students enjoy learning new things!
TEAMS:
I'm not a big sports fan but you know I have to love the Milan BULLDOGS!
FOODS:
Dr. Pepper, Peanut M & M's, sweet potatoes, dill pickle chips, ice
cream, and any meal spent in good company
EDUCATION:
I received my Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Bethel
College in 1986 with teaching endorsements in Elementary Education,
Early Childhood Education, and Special Education. I am Highly Qualified by
the State Department of Tennessee. I plan on beginning classes to obtain my
masters degree soon.
PETS:
Well....I've never had my own pet. BUT Dalton loves animals...all
animals! He has a chocolate lab named Hershey. He's a big baby! At
Christmas a few years ago, Dalton received a black lab puppy. He named her
Dixie...and I'm in love! Now that Dalton is in college, Dixie and I have
become big buddies!
OTHER FAVORITES:
Sundays, pedicures, flowers, rainy days spent "snuggled up", SNOW DAYS,
children's laughter, and the smell of a baby right after a bath!
TEACHING EXPERIENCE:
I have taught for 24 years. The last 20 years have been at Milan. I taught
Special Education for many years early in my career. The last 13 years have
been in First Grade.
I believe that each child has his or her own individual gifts and talents. It
is my responsibility to help identify each child's gifts to reach his or her
highest potential.
I also believe that each child develops at his or her own pace. Learning is
not a race to see who gets there first, but an individual process in which
children must be nurtured, supported, and challenged to do their best.
I believe learning is natural and should be an enjoyable experience. I will
help our students experience the JOY of learning and the satisfaction of
accomplishment.
