Counselor's Corner Article

      More news and info from the MHS guidance office.
     Students' schedules for the winter and spring trimester will be given 
to students Monday, Oct. 19, during homeroom. Students will then have the 
next two weeks to make changes with their counselors.  
     The University of Memphis invites interested students and parents to 
its Regional Reception to be held the evening of Nov. 5, from 5:30 until 
8:30 p.m. at the Jackson Chamber of Commerce. Register at 
www.memphis.edu/recruitment/receptions/reception.php.
     The Tennessee Concrete Association is having its annual High School 
Essay Contest for high school students ages 16-18. Cash prizes and 
scholarships will be awarded to winners. See Ms. Parkins for information. 
Deadline is November 30.
     ACT wants juniors and seniors to "tap into their creativity and 
possibly qualify for a scholarship" by entering the ACT Poster Concept Test. 
Students are to design a poster that encourages other students to attend 
college and to take the ACT. Go to www.actstudent.org/postercontest for an 
official entry form and rules. Entries must be postmarked on or between Oct. 
19, 2009, and January 30, 2010. 
     UTC is offering the Grote Scholarship for incoming freshmen next fall 
who plan to major in chemistry and have at least a 3.5 gpa and a 26 on the 
ACT. See Ms. Parkins for details. Deadline is Feb. 15, 2010. 
     MTSU invites seniors who have at least a 3.5 gpa and a 25 on the ACT to 
apply to its Honors College. Go to www.mtsu.edu/honors for info.
     The following scholarships are available online at Tennessee Student 
Assistant Corporation (TSAC) at www.tn.gov/collegepays: Ned McWherter 
Scholar for seniors having at least a 3.5 gpa and 29 ACT. Deadline: Feb. 15; 
Robert C. Byrd Scholarship for seniors having at least a 3.5 gpa or 3.0 gpa 
and 24 ACT. Deadline is March 1. This is an awesome site for every student 
whether planning to go to a two or four year college or a technical school.
     Sophomores or juniors interested in intensive learning experiences in 
the humanities, math and science, arts, international studies, scientific 
exploration of Tennessee heritage, teaching, technology, engineering, 
information technology, agriculture, and physics should look at applying to 
one of Tennessee's Governor's Schools. For more information, log on to the 
State Department of Education's website or see Ms. Parkins. Application 
deadlines vary with the first being Nov. 6, for the Arts.
      Seniors who are active in the community and who have overcome personal 
challenges may apply for the AXA Achievement Scholarship. Learn more at 
www.axa-achievement.com. Deadline to apply is Dec. 15.
      Milan High School has a new ACT prep program that is free! It's ACT 
Online Prep and can be accessed anywhere students have internet. See Ms. 
Parkins, Ms. Scarbrough, or Mr. Jones for a username and password.
      The Financial Aid Night for Seniors and Parents has been set for 
Thursday, January 14, 2010. 
      Bethel University invites seniors who have at least a 3.25 grade point 
average and a 24 on the ACT to enter the Hendrix Scholarship Competition to 
be held Feb. 19 & 20, 2010. Winners receive full tuition, room and board. 
Appy at www.bethelu.edu/admissions/hendrix_app. Deadline is Feb. 15.
      The State of Tennessee Securities Division invites seniors to enter 
the 2009-2010 Essay Contest. Go to www.tn.gov/commerce/securities for more 
information and to apply. Deadline is Dec. 4.
      The University of Tennesee invites seniors to apply for the Haslam 
Scholars Program, a prestigious honors program where winners will be awarded 
scholarships valued at $15,000 a year. For more information, go to 
http://honors.utk.edu/haslam.html. Deadline is Nov. 1.
       Any senior planning to apply to UT needs to do so by Dec. 1.          
Recruiters from the following institutions will be in the MHS 
cafeteria: National Guard - Oct. 19, NAVY- Oct. 21, Marines - Oct. - 23,  
MTSU - Nov. 2, and UTM – Nov. 10.

      Jackson State is offering an ACT Prep class on Tuesday and Thursday 
nights beginning Nov. 12. The time will be from 6-9 p.m. The cost is $175 
which includes the textbook. Call 425-2627 to register.
             Transcript requests should be made in writing in the notebook 
in the guidance office.
