Physics Syllabus

Physics
Mrs. Allen

Welcome back! I am excited that you are in my class and am looking forward
to a very successful trimester. Hopefully this information will answer any
questions you may have concerning this class.

Course Description: This course examines the relationship between matter and
energy and how they interact. This course will have a strong emphasis in the
mathematics of physics. Topics will include a mathematical toolkit, the
mechanics of physics, state of matter, waves and light, electricity, and
modern physics.

Pre-requisite: Physical Science, Algebra II, and Pre-Cal

Recommended Supplies: 2” three-ring binder, loose-leaf notebook paper
(no spiral notebooks), dividers(6), pencil, scientific calculator (TI 83 or
84 to use at home), $5.00 lab donation (optional)

Grading System: Student grades will comprise of 40% test average and 60%
daily average. Daily grades consist of classwork, homework, quizzes, and
labs. There will be an exam at the end of each trimester.

All tests and graded assignments will be returned for you to see. You can
always know what grade you are making. After reviewing the graded tests, I
will keep them on file. All other assignments will be kept in the student's
binder.

Grading Scale: A = 100-93	B = 92-85	C = 84-75	D = 74-70
	                                 F = 69-0

Expectations: 8 Keys of Excellence

1. Integrity: Conduct yourself with authenticity, sincerity and wholeness.
Your values and behavior are aligned.
2. Failure Leads to Success: Understand that failures simply provide you with
the information you need to succeed. There are no failures, only outcomes
and feedback. Everything can be useful if you know how to find the gift.
3. Speak with Good Purpose: Speak in a positive sense, and be responsible for
honest and direct communication. Avoid gossip and harmful communication.
4. This is it: focus your attention on the present moment, and make the most
of it. Give each task your best effort.
5. Commitment: Follow through on your promises and obligations; live your
vision. Do whatever it takes to get the job done.
6. Ownership: Take responsibility and be accountable for your actions.
7. Flexibility: Be open to change or a new approach when it helps you get the
   outcome you desire.
8. Balance: Keep your mind, body and spirit in alignment. Spend time
developing and maintaining these three areas.

Classroom Standards: Students will:
1.	come to class on time and be prepared.
2.	be respectful to others/themselves, and school/personal property.
3.	be responsible. You will be held accountable for your assignments,
make-up work, and behavior. Please make wise choices.

Disciplinary Procedures: The teacher will:
1.	give a warning (either silently or verbally).
2.	have a conference with the student. “Write offs” may be given.
3.	send the student to the office.
4.	send a note home and/or call a parent or guardian.
** In some cases, the first two steps will be bypassed and a direct
referral to the office will occur**
**Tardiness will be handled according to school policy.**

Classroom Procedures:
1.Turning in work – Students will place their work in the assigned basket
unless other instructions are given ahead of time.
2.Borrowing pencils – Students need to be prepared for class by having all
materials needed. If a student needs to borrow a pencil, he/she may do so
by getting one from the pencil holder and leaving a dime deposit. If the
student returns the pencil, then his/her deposit will be returned. If the
pencil is not returned, the student forfeits the deposit.
3.Answering in class – Students will not yell out answers in class. Students
will raise their hand and/or I will recognize someone.
4.Restroom/Water breaks – Please tend to these needs prior to class.
Exceptions will be made for students with medical excuses from their doctor
  or in emergency situations.
5.Assignment due dates – All assignments are to be turned in on time. If an
assignment is not turned in, a zero will be recorded. LATE WORK WILL NOT BE
ACCEPTED! As for long-term assignments or projects, these must be turned in
before or on the due date. If you are absent the day the project is due, it
has to be turned in to me before school begins in order to get full credit.
Staying home to complete an assignment is not fair to yourself or those who
worked hard to complete their's on time. Any long-term assignment not
turned in before class on the due date, will result in a grade no higher
than a 70 for up to the first day late. A 50 for the second day, a 30 for
the third day, and a 0 for any day after that.
6.Make-up work – Each student is responsible for his/her make-up work. A make-
up folder will be located in the classroom with any missed worksheets or
notes. Students are to obtain these from this folder. All other missed work
will be on the Table of Contents board. If a test or quiz was given the
first day absent, it will be made up the first day returned. Make-up tests
and quizzes will be given before or after school. If you ride a bus or can
not be at school during these times, please let me know. Do not assume I
know why a test or quiz is not made up. For all other missed work, you will
have one day for every day missed, plus one.
7.Cheating – If a student is caught cheating, he/she will receive a zero on
that assignment. This goes both all persons involved. Allowing someone to
copy from you is the same as cheating! This refers to homework, as well.
Remember, we are all held accountable for our choices.
8.Class dismissal – Neither the bell nor the clock dismisses you. When
teaching and instruction are completed, the Teacher will dismiss the class.
Otherwise, keep book, notes, handouts, etc. open until you are dismissed.
