Dear Parents,
Welcome to my class! I'm looking forward to getting know all of
you and to having a wonderful year. I think it is vital for us to
work together in order for your child to have a successful year. I
always welcome parent input and involvement. Below are some school
and classroom procedures. Please read over it and let me know if you
have any questions. The topics are listed alphabetically. Again,
welcome!
Nina Steelman
Absences:
The policy on absences and being tardy is outlined in the
front of your child's agenda. Please send an excuse note for any
absence. If you are going to pick up make-up work, call or email me
by 9:00.
Agendas:
Daily homework assignments will be copied by your child into
his/her agenda. Check the agenda for county and school policies and
procedures for items such as being tardy, absences, and dress
code.
Arrival:
Our school day begins at 7:15. Students arriving after the
National Anthem are considered tardy. The school doors open at
6:45. Students arriving early should wait in the gym for a teacher
to pick them up for class.
Birthdays:
Feel free to send in a special treat for your child's
birthday. The treat will be taken to the cafeteria at lunch time.
Cafeteria:
Breakfast and lunch are served in the school cafeteria.
Meal tickets are sold on Mondays mornings. Please send all
money/checks in an envelope. On the front, write your child's
first
and last name, teachers, name, amount of money, and lunch code
number. If your child eats breakfast, make sure he/she arrives no
later than 7:00 AM. Please help your child memorizes their lunch
code number.
Daily Folder:
Your child will have a red daily folder. He/she should have
this folder in their backpack every day. It will contain notes to
and from school as well as homework. This folder along with their
agenda should come back to school EVERY day. The folders have been
ordered but aren't here yet. Until they arrive, all items to go
home will be in the front pocket of the agenda.
Discipline:
Classroom Rules:
1. Follow directions the first time.
2. Listen to the speaker.
3. Raise your hand and wait for permission to speak or leave
your seat.
4. Keep hands, feet, objects, and unkind words to yourself.
Rewards:
Stickers, notes, treat jar, and treasure box.
Consequences:
1. Pull 1 card: Verbal warning
2. Pull 2 cards- 10 minutes time-out at recess.
3. Pull 3 cards- 15 minutes time-out at recess.
4. Pull 4 cards- all of recess in time-out
5. Pull 5 cards- visit to office.
Dismisssal:
The school day ends at 2:15. If you are picking your child
up early, you must go to the office to sign him/her out. If your
child is going home in a different manner, for instance, riding in a
car instead of the normal bus, I must have a note with a parent's
signature. Otherwise, the student will have to go home in the
normal manner. Office approval is required if your child is riding
a different bus or getting off at a different stop.
Dress Code:
The Wilson County Dress Code is outlined in the student's
agenda and is also available on the county website of
www.wcschools.com.
Email:
You can reach me at steelmann@wcschools.com. If you would
like to be included in a class email distribution list, please email
from the address I should use.
Handwriting:
We use D'Nealian manuscript in the second grade. It is
fluid and helps prepare children for cursive writing in the third
grade.
Homework:
Homework assignments will be written on the board each day.
Your child will copy it in their agenda. You can also find homework
assignments posted on website. The website is
http://www.teacherweb.com/TN/MtJulietElementary/MrsSteelman/.
Lunch:
School lunches cost $1.50. If you are going to pay for a
week or longer, please send a check made out to MJE on Mondays. On
the memo section of your check, please write your child's first and
last name with their lunch code number. Please enclose any money or
checks in an envelope with your child's name and my name.
Monday Folders:
In addition to your child's Daily Folder, they will also
have a blue Monday Folder. This folder will have all graded papers
from the previous week. Please look over the papers, sign the
signature sheet and return to school on Tuesday.
Snack:
We have a snack in our room each morning. Anything you
deem appropriate is fine with me. If you send a drink, please make
sure not to send glass containers or sodas.
Spelling and Math Facts Tests:
Spelling words lists and a math facts sheet will be sent
home each week. Please help your child spell the words and memorize
the math facts. Tests will be given on Fridays.
Please let me know if you have questions.
I look forward to a wonderful year.
