A few years ago, I got out on the road on my motorcycle to exercise my new
riding skills.
As I experienced the exhileration associated with this new
pasttime, I reflected on how thankful I was that my instructor had not been
easy on me. During practice, I had felt so much fear that I often wanted to
quit. Yet, each time that I wanted to quit, he firmly instructed me how to
correct my errors, and then required me to try again. At times, I became very
angry toward him for pushing me so hard. However, he repeatedly stated to me
that he knew what I needed and would not allow me to go riding until I
mastered those needed skills.
Later, while riding around on country roads, I thought
about the students who need that kind of instruction - hard, to the point,
but necessary to prepare them for a very challenging workforce that they will
face when they graduate high school. I can only hope
that someday you will understand why each teacher pushes you to do your best
for your own sake.
