Project #1

Science Project #1 – Fields of Engineering (15% of grade)

Due Date:  September 14th (A) and 15th (B)

After researching your particular field of engineering, your goal is to provide information about this area of engineering to the class in the form of a presentation.    You will present your findings to the class by using one of the following:

  1. PowerPoint presentation;
  2. Video;
  3. Tri-fold board that contains relevant information (including pictures) along with a typed, double-spaced report with a cover page and Works Cited page.  The report must be at least five pages in length (not including cover page or Works Cited page).

All presentations must include at least three reliable reference sources.  If you elect to use a PowerPoint demonstration or video, you should state your references at the end of your presentation.

You must include answers to the following questions, along with any information that you find interesting or relevant, or that you feel may be interesting to your classmates:

  1. Define/describe this field of engineering.
  2. What do engineers that work in this field do?  (What made them decide to go into this field of engineering; what is a typical day for them?)
  3. What are some products/services/processes, etc. typically designed/implemented by this type of engineer?
  4. Describe how one technology developed in this field has enhanced our lives.
  5. What type of degree is required in order to become this type of engineer?  What are some of the courses specific to this degree?
  6. What are the closest universities/colleges that offer this degree?
  7. Where do these engineers work (who typically employs them)?  Are there local firms that employ this type of engineer?
  8. How much does this job pay (typical salary range)?

Presentations should be no longer than five minutes.  (You should practice your presentation beforehand so that it does not exceed five minutes.)  All work should be neat and easy to understand.  Be creative with your presentation!  To get you started with your research, take a look at http://www.tryengineering.org.
