Students will complete a total of 8 book reports this year (two reports
every nine-week period.) The criteria for the books they may choose is
listed below:
-Must be fiction
-Must be at least 120 pages in length
-Must be at 7th grade reading level or higher
-Must be content-appropriate for school
-Must be approved by me
Book reports should be at least five parargraphs in length, and each
paragraph should consist of at least 5 sentences. The report should be
typed. If a student is unable to type his/her report, then the student needs
to attach a signed note from a parent/guardian explaining why the student
could not type/print the report. If there is not a note attached, points
will be deducted from the student's book report grade.
The book report MUST follow the format below. If a student does not follow
the format or fails to identify any of the terms listed below, points will
be deducted from his/her score.
Paragraph 1: Introduction
-Needs to include the book title and author.
-Identify the genre of the story
(fantasy, adventure, science fiction, etc.)
-Describe the setting (where and when the story
takes place
-Tell me from what person point-of-view the story is
written (first, second, or third)
-The last sentence should be the main idea of the
story (summarize the story in one sentence)
Paragraph 2: Characters
-Describe the main characters in the story. Be
sure to identify the protagonist.
-Also describe any important minor characters.
Paragraph 3: Plot Summary
-Give a brief plot summary. (Don’t tell me
everything that happens-- just the most important
stuff!!)
-You must identify the conflict of the story and
tell if it is internal or external.
-You must identify the climax of the story.
Paragraph 4: Theme
-Discuss one of the story’s main themes. Theme
refers to what the story is REALLY about. It is
a greater message or insight into life. Give
specific examples from the story that relate to
the theme.
Paragraph 5: Conclusion
-Tell what you thought of the book
-Would you recommend the book to other people? Why?
-What sort of people would like this story?
-What are the book’s strengths and weaknesses?
-Did the author do a good job or a poor job in
keeping you interested in the story? Why or why
not?
