Book Reports

 Second Quarter Book Reports
 7C Language Arts Class
	
	This term we will use the following outline for writing our book 
reports.  I will also give you instruction for the presentation of the book 
report each time.  The outline will always be the same, but the presentation 
methods will vary.

	This quarter you are required to read two novels, (fiction, chapter 
books). The novel you read must be AR.  All novels must be 100 pages or 
more.  All book reports must be made on a book from the suggested list.  Try 
out different authors to get a feel for their craft. 
The due dates for the book reports are:

			A2 Class		    B1 and B3 Classes
		November 4, 2009		November 5, 2009
		
		December 4, 2009 		December 4, 2009 	
		 

8-paragraph essay
(Each paragraph must be 5 sentences or more)

The book report must be in ink or typed and must also have 10 responses 
attached. 

1st paragraph:  

One sentence telling the title and author of the book. One sentence 
commenting on the type of book, genre, i.e., science fiction, adventure, or 
mystery.  One sentence describing the plot.  One sentence telling about the 
characters of the book. One sentence describing the theme.

2nd paragraph:
	Describe the main characters of the novel.  Describe them physically 
and mentally.  Indicate special or unusual qualities or any significant role 
they may have played in the story.  

3rd paragraph:
	Describe the minor characters of the novel.  Describe them physically 
and mentally.  Indicate special or unusual qualities or any significant role 
they may have played in the story.

4th paragraph:
	Describe the setting of the story.  Tell how the setting sets the 
mood for the story.  Use what we have learned about description to write this 
paragraph.

5th paragraph:
	In this paragraph describe the rising action of the story.  Describe 
what happened using examples from the novel.  In this paragraph describe some 
of the conflict that is taking place.  Tell if it is internal conflict or 
external conflict.

6th paragraph:
	In this paragraph describe the climax of the story and the 
resolution.  What was the turning point of the story? Tell how the main 
problem was resolved. How did the story end. 

7th paragraph:
	What was the theme?  Give examples from the novel to explain how the 
theme of the story was developed.

8th paragraph:
	Tell your opinion of the book and why. Be specific.  Tell if the 
character description or the plot made the story more interesting.   Also, in 
this paragraph tell who might enjoy reading this book and why.


You must take the AR test.

Suggested Reading Responses:

As you are reading your novel stop about every 10-20 pages and choose a 
response to write down.  Remember that you must have 10 responses to turn in 
with your book report.  Make sure that on your response page you write the 
title of your book and before each entry put the date and the page you have 
just read. 

Here are some suggested responses, but you may come up with some of your own.
1.	Tell in one sentence what has just happened in the story.  Relate it 
to a similar experience you have had.
2.	Tell in one sentence what has just happened in the story.  Relate it 
to a movie or another book where a similar event occurred and tell how that 
character handled it. 
3.	Write some advice to the main character.  Explain what they have done 
and what they could have done differently
4.	Tell briefly what has just happened and predict what you think will 
happen next. 
5.	Explain how the character is like or so different from you.  Use 
examples of what they are thinking or doing to show the contrast or 
similarity. 
6.	What parts of the book seem most believable?  Why?  
7.	What do you think the author is trying to teach us about life or 
living?  Why?  (Use examples from the story)
8.	What connections are there between the book and your own life?  
Explain
9.	I think the setting is important because…
10.	The main character reminds me of ____________ because …… (relate to a 
parent, friend, or TV  or famous personality)
11.	I think the relationship between _____________ and ___________ is 
interesting because…
12.	Describe a funny, scary or sad part of the story.
13.	Tell some of the internal conflict and explain what you would do in 
that situation.
14.	Tell some of the events in the story and tell how you would act if 
you were one of the characters.
15.	Tell what the author does that makes this book interesting.
