What is a home language survey?
Every student in the school system must have in their permenant record a
home language survey. If the home language survey has any other language
indicated on it the student must be referred to the ESOL department for an
evaluation. The home language survey asks questions about the student and
anyone else living in the home.
--------------------------------------
What if there is another language on the home language survey?
The teacher will give a copy of the home language survey to the ESOL
department. Then the ESOL department will administer a state approved exam,
ELDA. Services will be provided based upon ELDA scores.

What are T1 and T2 students?
T1 students are first year Transitional students, which means that it is
their first year after exiting ESOL class (daily services).
T2 students are second year Transitional students, which means that it is
their second year after exiting ESOL class (daily services).
--------------------------------------
Do ESOL students have to take T-CAP
Yes!
Spring 2008 all ELL students will take the TERRA NOVA with their peers.
--------------------------------------
Do I have to modify for my ESOL students?
Yes! You must modify to the point of success. Monitor and adjust on a
daily basis. If they must take state mandated test they must be prepared.
--------------------------------------
Do I have to send everything home in Spanish?
Important documents such as Field Trip Permission, Report Cards, etc. must
be in a language that is comprehensible to the parent. You can not rely on
a student to translate a report card or such. A field trip form in English
for a child whose parents speak no English is not worth the paper it is
written on and it will be the same as taking a child on a field trip without
a permission form.

How can I get something translated?
The quickest way is to send me an email with you letter attached. You can
also give me a disk with you information on it. Translations are on a first
come first serve basis. It will be returned to you in the same format with
which I receive it.
