LOCAL CELEBRITY VISITS SES MUSIC CLASSES
In recognition of American Education Week, a Smithville resident visited
Smithville Elementary School to speak to Friday’s scheduled music classes.
Greg Owens, also known as StyckMan from Gator and the StyckMan Morning
Program on Cookeville’s 94.7 The Country Giant, is the two-time winner of one
of Country Music’s most prestigious awards. The CMA for Broadcast Personality
of the Year was presented to him during the 43rd Annual CMA Awards, which was
aired Wednesday, November 11th on ABC Television Network. This is the second
time he has won this award; November 2007 marking the first.

StyckMan addressed the students by explaining what he did for a living and
some of his responsibilities in radio. He also encouraged the students to do
well in school. “The subjects you’re studying now, English, math, and
reading,” he explained, “are the very subjects I need to know to do my job.”
School board member, Kenny Rhody, who also attended the presentation,
added, “Study hard in school and you can be anything you want to be!”

SES Music Teacher, Kelly Jo Birmingham, arranged for StyckMan to come speak
to her classes on Friday. “I can not think of a better community leader to
talk to my music classes,” Birmingham explained. “StyckMan combines his
passion of music with his support of education. He actively assists the
Northside Elementary School Spring Musical and the DeKalb County High School
Band. I can list countless other times he has supported our county’s students
and their education, not just in the arts. I really appreciate him for taking
the time to come out today.”

When asked why he is involved with arts education, StyckMan responded, “I
believe student participation in music programs, such as the musical and
band, helps foster self-motivation, cooperation, responsibility, creativity,
discipline, and self-esteem.”

In response to American Education Week, Rhody replied, “I’ve said it once but
I’ll say it again. Our schools have the best staff in the world! You guys are
great! Thank you for what you do!”

2009 MUSIC AND ART SCHEDULES -
The music and art schedules are exactly the same as last school year.
Northside students will have art every week until Christmas
break. When students return in January, they will have music lessons every
week until the end of the school year. I look forward to seeing your child
after Christmas break!

"I LOVE ROCK 'N' ROLL" MUSICAL
Our musical was a huge success! I want to thank all the people and businesses
who supported our students to make this show possible. I would also like to
say thank you to the parents, students, faculty, and staff for their
continued support. Great job, everyone! I am so proud of our fifth graders! I
will miss them next year.
