8th Reading TCAP Terms

1. analogy--similarity between like features of two things such as between
a heart and a pump.

2. Allusion (not to be confused with an illusion or imaginary object)--
making a reference or mentioning a historical, literary, mythological,etc
event.
Example: If it continues to rain, we may need to build and ark. (This is an
allusion to ___________.)

3. Assumption--the act of taking for granted or supposing a thing without
proof
Example: His assumption that Poe's narrator in "The Pit and the Pendelum"
was a serial murderer is totally unfounded.

4. Autobiography--a history of a person's life written or told by that person

5. Antecedent--a word, phrase or clause that is replaced by a pronoun later
usually, but occassionally earlier, in a sentence or paragraph
Example: Jane lost a glove and she can't find it. Jane is the antecedent of
she; glove is the antecedent of it.
Pronouns and antecedents must agree in number, case, and gender. (How would
this sentence work? Jane lost a glove and him can't find them.

6. Bias--to cause partiality or favoritism; to influence unfairly
Example: A tearful plea is designed to bias the jury.
