In kindergarten this year, we will be using the Scott Foresman Reading
Street Series. Scott Foresman Reading Street is an all-new scientifically
research-based reading program that is designed to help teachers build readers
through motivating and engaging literature while using a variety of teaching
tools.
Reading Street prioritizes skill instruction through a variety of
literature based books at the kindergarten level. It has funny stories, scary
stories and real-life adventures, and gradually introduced to nonfiction.
Each week has a different feature story that focuses on the right skill, at
the right time, and for every student. These skills include: phonemic
awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension and also encompasses
writing. This program also includes a variety of technology components, take
home readers, and home connections to reinforce skills for all learners.
Through this program, kindergarteners are learning to name all the
letters of the alphabet. We will introduce all the letters within the first
few weeks of school. After all the letters have been introduced, we will work
with your child on learning each letter more thoroughly which will include
skills such as: writing, identification, letter sound, and blending the sound
to read words. We have words which I will be calling "Tree-Mendous" or sight
words that your child will be learning to read. These words must be
memorized. Also each week we will have vocabulary words that go along with our
story to help expand each students vocabulary.
In the beginning, it may be difficult for some to blend and read the
words. We will be working on all these skills as a whole group, small group,
and during our literacy centers; however, we recommend that parents work with
their children at home on these words as well. On the beginning we will have
two new word wall ("Tree-Mendous") words every two weeks. We will also be
sending home a 1/2 page of homework each night Monday - Thursday that will
relate to the skills taught that will require only a few minutes to complete.
I have listed below the words for our first story, and will be adding
each additional story as we get to it. We will practice letter recognition and
sound of every letter everyday!
