for students who are not performing on grade-level, who are
educationally disadvantaged, and who are of a lower
socioeconomic background.

Why is Title I needed?

Funds received from the Federal Government help to put
programs, technology, additional staff, resources, etc.
into schools above and beyond that which is given by local
and state governments. The extra funds aid teachers in
improving the quality of instruction given with the goal
of increasing student achievement.

How do I know if my child's school is receiving Title I funds?

Ask. The administrators within the building will have
this information. Based on the percentage of
disadvantaged, at-risk student's, and/or the amount of free and
reduced lunch students at your child's
school will determine both if the school will qualify
for Title I funds and how much they will receive.

How will the funds received be utilized?

How to use Title I funds rests with each school. Title I
funds can be used to improve curriculum, instructional
activities, counseling, parental involvement, increase
staff, and program improvement. The funding will assist
schools in meeting the educational goals of low-income, at-risk,
and/or disadvantaged students.

Types of students that might be served by Title I funds
include migrant students, students with limited English
proficiency, homeless students, students with disabilities,
neglected students, delinquent students, at-risk students
or any student in need.

How will the funds received affect my child?

There are two ways Title I funds can be utilized within
a school. They can be Targeted Assistance or School-wide.

Targeted Assistance means that all Title I funds within
the school will be utilized only on the individual
students who have been targeted as migrant students,
students with limited English proficiency, homeless
students, students with disabilities, neglected students,
delinquent students, students who are at-risk for
reaching identified benchmarks, and/or who are already
performing below grade-level.

A School-wide program allows the school to address the
educational needs of at risk students; but it also allows
for the federal funds to be used with comprehensive
strategies for improving the academic needs of the
entire school so every student achieves high levels
of academic proficiency; not just the students with
the greatest need.

If I have questions about Title I, who can I talk to at my child's school?

You can always talk to the Principal or Assistant Principal
(if applicable)at your child's school for more information
about Title I. In addition, each school that qualifies for
Title I should have a Title I Coordinator. You may speak
to this professional as well.
