Homework

Parents, 
At the beginning of each six weeks, I send home a copy of the skills that 
will be covered.  Please go over these skills a few minutes daily.  It makes 
a big improvement!!

February 13-17
In Reading, we will be learning about initial blends (kl, fl, cr, sn, sp) and
ending blends (lk, st).  We will have 5 high frequency words: one, two, three,
four, five.  Our 2 leveled readers for the week are One, Two, Three, Four, and
Five and A Home for Flap the Cat. The books are on my website under the links
tab (4.3) and I send home copies.  
In Phonics, we will be learning about letter V and the sound it makes. 
Students should be able to read the following new words:  vent, vest, vet,
van.  We will have a test on Thursday.  Students will bring home word 
list #15 they should be able to read.  
In Math, we will begin our unit on addition.  Also, we will continue learning
number WORDS zero through twenty. 
In science we will be learning about how things change.  
In social studies we will be learning about America.
*Tuesday:  Valentine’s Day Party.  Please send party item!
*Friday:  Last day of the 4th six weeks.  Report cards go home next week.
*Don’t forget to read the readers every single night. 

February 6-10
In Reading, we will be learning letter L, the sound it makes, and we will
review cause/effect and the 3 new high frequency words:  are, that, do.  Our 2
leveled readers for the week are A Rainy Day and A Musical Adventure.  The
books are on my website under the links tab (4.2) and I send home copies.  
In Phonics, we will be learning about letter D and the sound it makes. 
Students should be able to read the following new words:  dog, doll, disk,
sad, had, slid, hid, mud, red, rid, sand, stand.  We will have a test on
Thursday.  Students will bring home word list #14 they should be able to read.  
In Math, we will continue learning about measurement and comparing weights. 
We will have a test on Friday.  Also, we will continue learning number WORDS
zero through twenty. 
In science we will be learning about what things are made of.  
In social studies we will be learning about American Monuments.
*Your child MUST wear tennis shoes on Tuesdays and Fridays for P.E.
*This is the last week to purchase a memory book ($10)!
*PTO meeting Tuesday night at 6:00 PM.  

January 30-February 3
In Reading, we will be learning letter H and the sound it makes.  We will be
learning about comparing/contrasting and sequencing events in a story.  We
will also learn 3 new high frequency words:  are, that, do.  Our 2 leveled
readers for the week are All in a Day and Hap is Hot.  You can find these
books on my website under the links tab (4.1) and I send home copies..  
In Phonics, we will be learning about letter Y and the sound it makes. 
Students should be able to read the following new words:  yam, yak, yell, yet,
yap, yes.  We will have a test on Thursday.  Also, students will bring home
list #13 of words they should be able to read independently.  
In Math, we will begin a unit on measurement.  Students will learn to compare
and order objects based on size and how to measure the length of objects. 
Also, we will begin learning number words to twenty.  Please practice with
your child.  
In science we will be learning about Earth.
In social studies we will be learning about presidents and patriots.
*Tuesday, January 31st mid six-weeks progress reports will be sent home.

January 23-27
In Reading, we will be reviewing learning letter O and identifying the main
idea of the story.  We will be reviewing the 3 sight words from last week:  
they, of, and you.  Our 2 leveled readers for the week are Hop on Top! and
Chameleons.  Remember you can find these books on my website under the links
tab (3.6) and I send home copies of the books.  
In Phonics, we will be learning about letter E and the 2 sounds it makes. 
Students should be able to read the following new words:  net, bell, leg,
tell, spell, rest, step, nest, mess.  We will have a test on Thursday.  Also,
students will bring home list #12 of words they should be able to read
independently.  
In Math, we will continue to identify ordinal numbers.  We will have a chapter
test on Friday!
In science we will be learning about homes and habitats.
In social studies we will be learning about where we live (city v. country)
*Don’t forget to send box tops and empty Capri sun pouches.
*Please read with your child every night.
*Memory book money and form is due Friday, January 27th!  


January 17-20
In Reading, we will be learning letter O, discussing drawing conclusions,
reviewing the purpose of informational text, and learning 3 sight words:  
they, of, and you.  Our 2 leveled readers for the week are Dots, Dots, Dots!
and Pop! Pop! Pop!  Remember you can find these books on my website under the
links tab (3.5) and I send home copies of the books.  
In Phonics, we will be learning about letter C and the sound it makes.  Letter
C is cousin to letter K (they make the same sounds).  Students should be able
to read the following new words:  cross, cost, class, can, cut, cup, cat,
cast.  We will have a test on Thursday.  Also, students will bring home list
#11 of words they should be able to read independently.  
In Math, we will continue to learn about fractions and begin learning ordinal
numbers (first, second, third, etc).  PLEASE continue to practice counting,
recognizing numbers, and number words at home!
In science we will be learning about being families. 
In social studies we will be learning about maps and globes.
*We will celebrate 100 days of school on Friday.
*Don’t forget to wear Dalmatian shirts on Monday (23rd) for 101 days!
*READ EVERY SINGLE NIGHT!

January 9-13
In Reading, we will be learning letter F, discussing the plot of a story, and
reviewing the sight words see and look.  Our 2 leveled readers for the week
are We Can Fan and Dad and Fif Fan.  Remember you can find these books on my
website under the links tab (3.4) and I send home copies of the books.  
In Phonics, we will be learning about letter Z and the sound it makes. 
Students should be able to read the following new words:  buzz, fizz, fuzz,
zip, zap, zig.  We will have a test on Thursday.  Also, students will bring
home list #10 of words they should be able to read independently.  
PLEASE review this list with your child.    
In Math, we will have a test on Wednesday.  On Thursday, we will begin
learning about fractions (equal parts and half/halves).
In science we will be learning about being healthy. 
In social studies we will be learning about culture.
*PTO Meeting on Tuesday, January 10th.  Please make plans to attend. 
*Remember NO SCHOOL on Monday, January 16th.

January 2-6
In Reading, we will be learning letters D and K, what a biography is, and
discussing cause and effect.  We will have 2 new sight words:  see and look. 
Our 2 leveled readers for the week are Dan Did It! and At Bat.  Remember you
can find these books on my website under the links tab (3.3) and I send copies
of these books home.  
In Phonics, we will be learning letter U and the sound it makes.  We will also
learn the number word four.  Students should be able to read the following new
words:  tub, tug, pup, hug, sun, mug, bug, rug.  We will have a test on
Friday.  Also, students will bring home list #9 of words they should be able
to read independently.  PLEASE review this list with your child.    
In Math, we will continue learning about solid shapes.
In science we will be learning about living things.  
In social studies we will be learning about inventors.
*Report Cards will be sent home Wednesday, January 4th.  
*Please read the leveled readers NIGHTLY!
*We need baby wipes and Clorox wipes!!
*Please send Capri sun pouches and box tops!

December 12-16
In Reading, we will not start a new story this week.  We will be reviewing
skills from last week and working on Christmas activities.  
In Phonics, we will be learning about letter B and the sound it makes. 
Students should be able to read the following new words:  bib, bat, bag, ban,
bass.  We will have a test on Thursday.  Also, students will bring home 
list #8 of words they should be able to read independently.  PLEASE review
this list with your child.    
In Math, we will learn about symmetry and solid shapes (cone, cylinder,
sphere, and cube).  
In science we will be learning about our 5 senses.    
In social studies we will be learning about holidays around the world.
*Music Program-Tuesday, December 13th at 6:30 PM  
*Christmas Party-Thursday, December 15th.  Please send $1 for drink
*Friday, December 17th is a half day.  Students dismiss at 11:30 AM.
*Students return to school on Tuesday, January 3, 2012.  

November 28-December 2
In Reading, we will be learning letters N and B and the sounds both letters
make.  We will be learning 3 new high frequency words:  me, she, with.  The
skill for the week is comparing and contrasting.  Our two leveled readers for
the week are Panda’s Nap and The Baby Panda.  Remember you can find these
books on my website under the links tab (3.1).  Please read nightly!    
In Phonics, we will be learning about letter R and the sound it makes. 
Students should be able to read the following new words:  rip, ram, rot, rag,
ran, rat.  We will have a test on Thursday.  Also, students will bring home
list #6 of words they should be able to read independently.  PLEASE review
this list with your child.    
In Math, we will compare numbers by identifying which groups have more, fewer,
or are equal.  Please continue to practice identifying numbers and number
words 0-10.  Also, continue to practice counting to 100.  
In science we will be learning about plants.  
In social studies we will be learning about communication.  
*PLEASE remember the coin drive.  Send loose change if possible.  
*Don’t forget to purchase chances for a free guided duck hunt!  ($1 per chance)
*Winterfest is Saturday, December 3rd.  Games start at 5 PM.  Make plans to
attend!

November 21 and 22
We will complete Thanksgiving activities and review skills from last week.  

November 14-18
In Reading, we will be reviewing skills taught in Unit 2 such as sequencing,
main idea, characters, setting, and real v. fantasy.  We will continue to
study letter I and the 2 sounds it makes and the high frequency words he and
for.  Our two leveled readers for the week are Me!  and Tim’s Garden. 
Remember you can find these books on my website under the links tab (2.6).  
In Phonics, we will be learning about letter F and the sound it makes. 
Students should be able to read the following new words:  fan, fin, film, fog,
flag.  We will have a test on Thursday.  Also, students will bring home list
#5 of words they should be able to read independently.  PLEASE review this
list with your child.    
In Math, we will learn how to read a graph on Monday.  On Tuesday we will
begin reviewing for our test on THURSDAY.  Please practice recognizing numbers
and number words!!   
In science we will be learning about life.  
In social studies we will be learning about the first Thanksgiving.  
*Monday, November 14th-Scholastic Order is due!
*Friday, November 18th-Annual Thanksgiving Dinner and Play.  Hope you are able
to attend!  Students can leave after the play.
*Please read the leveled readers EVERY SINGLE DAY!!!!

November 7-11
In Reading, we will be learning letter I and the 2 sounds it makes (many
students struggled with this sound last week).  We will be reviewing sequence:
first, next, then, last and learning 2 new high frequency words he and for. 
Our two leveled readers for the week are A House for My Fish and Little
Iguana. Remember you can find these books on my website under the links tab
(2.5).  
In Phonics, we will be learning about letter S and the sound it makes. 
Students should be able to read the following new words:  gas, sap, sit, stop,
spin, last, slip, sip.  We will have a test on Thursday.  Also, students will
bring home list #4 of words they should be able to read independently.  PLEASE
review this list with your child.    
In Math, we will learn number 10, count to 10, discuss different ways to make
10, and put numbers 0-10 in correct order.  Please review the number poems and
writing numbers 0-10 with your child.  
In science we will learn about the sun.  
In social studies we will learn about families.  
**November 7th-Research Projects are due.  
*November 9th-Report Cards go home.
*November 10th-PTO meeting at 6:00 PM
*November 11th-Veteran's Day Program at 10:00

October 31-November 4
In reading, we will be learning letter C, discussing the difference between
real and fantasy, discussing hibernation, and reviewing 3 high frequency
words:  we, my, like.  Our two new leveled readers for the week are:  
Cam the Cow and Winter.  Remember you can find these books on my website under
the links tab (2.4).  
In phonics, we will be learning letter I and the 2 sounds it makes.  Students
should be able to read the following new words:  pig, pin, lip, lit, him, in,
tin, it, pit, tip.  We will have a test on Thursday.  Also, students will
bring home list #3 of words that they should be able to read independently. 
PLEASE review this list with your child.    
In math, we will continue learning numbers 6-10.  Please practice writing
these numbers and reading number words.  
In Science we are learning about the difference between day and night.  
In Social Studies we are learning about transportation.  
*Costume Day is on Monday.  The cost is $2.  Also goodies will be for sale.
*Class Picture/Remake Day is on Wednesday, November 2nd.  

October 24-28
In reading, we will be learning letter P (initial and final), discussing main
idea, and learning 3 new words:  we, my, like.  Our two new leveled readers
for the week are:  Tam and Sam Go to the Zoo and Pat the Penguin. Remember you
can find these books on my website under the links tab (2.3).  
In phonics, we will be learning letter M and the sound it makes.  Students
should be able to read the following new words:  mop, ham, mat, man, mom, map.
  We will have a test on Thursday.  Also, students will bring home list #2 of
words that they should be able to read independently.  PLEASE review this list
with your child.    
In math, we will have a chapter test Wednesday on numbers 0-5.  We will begin
numbers 6 & 7 on Thursday.  
In Science we are learning about weather.  
In Social Studies we are learning about history.  
*Please send Winterfest Money ($10) as soon as possible.
*Continue to practice reading, recognizing numbers, and number words.
*If you have a suggestion for a Winterfest game, please let me know!!

October 17-21
In reading, we will discuss the setting of a story.  We will learn about
letter S and the sound it makes.  We will be reviewing the high frequency
words: have and is.  Our two leveled readers for the week are Soccer Game and
Tam and Sam in the Orange Grove. Remember you can find these books on my
website under the links tab (2.2).  
In phonics, we will be learning letter N and the sound it makes.  Students
should be able to read the following new words:  nap, pan, ant, not, nag, tan,
at.  We will have a test on Thursday.  Also, starting this week students will
bring home a list of 10-12 words that they should be able to read
independently.  PLEASE review this list with your child nightly.  
In Math, we will begin learning number 0, and understanding the words more,
fewer, and equal.  Please review the number poems I sent home to help students
identify and write the numbers.  
In social studies, we will learn about time, birthdays, holidays, and calendars.  
In science, we will learn about water.   
*PLEASE read the leveled readers EVERY SINGLE NIGHT!
*Please keep the ‘word wheels’ we make in class and practice with your child.  
*Mid-six weeks progress reports go home Tuesday, October 18th.  
*K-4 Fun Night is Friday, October 21st.  Hope your child can attend!  

October 3-14
In Reading, we will discuss comparing/contrasting.  We will be learning the
letter A,a and the sound it makes.  Our new high frequency words for the week
are:  have and is.  Our leveled readers for the week are Alligator Ann and Tam
at the Beach.  Remember you can find these books on my website under the links
tab (2.1).  
In phonics, we will learn letter A, and the sound it makes (which is great
because it is the letter we are learning in Reading).  Students should be able
to read the following words:  log, hog, hot, got, tot, lot, top, pop, hop,
hat, pot, tag, gag, gap, lag, lap, and tap.  We will have a test on Thursday
(October 13th).  Also, we will be making “Ants on a Log.”  I encourage you to
ask your child about this 
In Math, we will begin learning about numbers 0-5.  This includes counting,
making sets, learning the number word, writing the number, and sequencing.  
In Science, we will be talking about Earth.  
In Social Studies, we will be talking about responsibility.  
*Picture Day is Wednesday, October 5th.
*Parent Teacher Conference is Wednesday, October 5th and Thursday, October 6th.  
*Fall Break is Thursday, October 6th-10th.  We will return on Tuesday, October
11th.  
*PTO Meeting is on Tuesday, October 11th at 6:00 PM.  Please make plans to
attend!.
*Scholastic Book Order is due on Friday, October 14th.  

September 26-30
In Reading, we will focus on letter T (initial and ending sound), review the
high frequency words "to" and "a" (ugh!), and learn how to
categorize/classify.  Our 2 leveled readers for the week are Toy Store and
Tony’s Taxi.  The books are on my website under the links tab (1.6).  
In phonics, we will learn letter P and the sound it makes.  Students should be
able to read the following words:  log, hog, hot, got, tot, lot, top, pop, and
hop.  We will have a test on Thursday.  
In Math, we will continue to learn about patterns.  We will review on Thursday
and have a test on Friday.  
In Science, we will be talking about science safety. 
In Social Studies, we will be talking about being good citizens.  
*Report cards will go home Monday, September 26th.       
**Please don’t forget to go to limeadesforlearning.com and vote for our
reading project.  Friday is the last day to vote!

September 19-23
In Reading, we will focus on letter M and the sound it makes.  We will learn
about characters.  We will have 2 new high frequency words 
"a” (ugh) and "to".  Our 2 leveled readers for the week are Cat and Dog Munch
Together and Mouse and Moose.  You can find the books on our website under the
links tab (1.5).  Remember, the word “the’ is th-ugh, not thee.  
In Phonics, we will be learning letter T and the sound it makes.  Students
should be able to read the words hog, log, hot, got, tot, lot.  We will have a
test on Thursday.
In math, we will continue learning about patterns:  make, extend, copy.
In science, we will learn about science tools.  We’ll have a test on Friday.
In social studies, we will learn about location and maps.  
*Please continue to read the leveled readers nightly.

September 12-16
In Reading, we will learn letters T-Z.  We will review high frequency words
"the" and "little".  We will begin learning how to classify and categorize. We
will also begin learning how to discriminate initial sounds.  Our 2 leveled
readers for the week are Cat and Dog Go to Town and Where Is It? **You can
find these stories on my website under the ‘links’ tab (1.4).
In Phonics, we will be learning letter H and the sound it makes.  We will
learn 1 new word-hog.  We will have a test on Thursday.
In math, we will have a test on Tuesday about position words.  
On Wednesday, we will begin learning about patterns.  
In science, we will learn what science is and how we use science.  We will
have a test on Friday.
In social studies, we will learn about school.  
*PTO Meeting on Monday, September 12th at 6:00 PM in the library.
*Grandparent’s Day on Friday, September 16th. 

September 5-9
In Reading, we will be learning about letters O-S and how to sequence events
from a story.  We will be learning 2 new high frequency words "the" and
"little".  Our 2 leveled readers for the week are Cat and Dog Play Together
and Look Around!   **You can find these stories on my website under the
‘links’ tab (1.3).  
In Phonics, we will learn about letter G, the sound it makes, and the word
log.  We will continue to work on identifying vowels and consonants.  We will
take our first phonics test on Friday.  
In Math, we will continue to learn about position words.  We will focus on
before/after and left/right.  
We are still waiting for our science and social studies magazines to be delivered.

August 29-September 2
In Reading, we will be learning about letters F-N and identifying the
characters and setting of a story.  We will review the high frequency words
"I", "am".  Our 2 leveled readers for the week are Cat and Dog Work Together
and How Many?   **You can find these stories on my website under the ‘links’
tab (1.2).  
In Phonics, we will learn about letter O and the sound it makes.  Also,
students will begin to identify vowels and consonants. 
In Math, we will review sorting on Monday and take a test on Tuesday.  On
Wednesday, we will begin learning about the following position words: 
inside/outside, over/under/on, and top/middle/bottom.  
*Our science and social studies magazines have not been delivered.  
**Wednesday, August 31st, I will send home the 1st 6-weeks progress report. 
Please sign and return it to school.
**Friday, September 2nd is the last day to order Scholastic books.
**Monday, September 5th:  No School due to Labor Day.  

August 22-26
In Reading, we will be learning about letters A-E, rhyming words, ordinal
numbers first-sixth, and learning the sight words I  and am.  Our 2 leveled
readers for the week are Cat and Dog Go to School and Colors Around Us.

In Phonics, we will be learning letter L and the sound it makes.  
In math, we will learn about sorting based on color, shape, and other
attributes.  
Our Science and Social Studies magazines have not arrived yet.  I am hoping
they will be here by next week.  
*Back to school night is Tuesday, August 23rd starting at 6:00 PM.  I hope to
see you here!

August 9-12 and 15-19
This week, we will be learning about our school, rules/procedures, fire and 
tornado drills, learn where things are located, begin working on coloring 
skills, and writing our first names.  We will also begin to identify letters,
colors, and shapes.
