Second Grade Handbook

Welcome to the 2009-2010 school year! I am very excited about having the
opportunity to work with you and your child this year.

ABSENCES
If your child must be absent, please send an excuse within three days to
turn into the office. Your child will have two days for each day they are
absent to complete any make up work.

ACCELERATED READER
The students will all take the STAR test on the computer the first week of
school. This will determine a reading level. This is the level of books
they will check out from the library. The children will check out two books
each week. One book will come home for them to read with you, and the other
will stay at school for the students to read at school. When the children
are able to read their books on their own they will begin taking
comprehension tests on the computer. Points will be accumulated based on
their scores for them to use in a variety of different ways throughout the
year in the classroom.

AGENDAS
Each day your child will bring home their agenda. There will be a daily
message regarding your child’s behavior for the day, and any other
individual notes I may need to send home. (When your child has a great day
there will be a green stamp, in their agenda in place of a note.) Please
initial each day that you have checked the agenda.

ASSESSMENTS
Students will be assessed in reading, phonics, and spelling on Fridays.
Math assessments will be at the end of the units. These papers will be sent
home on Tuesdays.

BIRTHDAYS
Birthday treats are welcome in our classroom! Please let me know to expect
them a day ahead of time. We will usually enjoy the treats during our lunch
time.

COMMUNICATION
If you need to reach me you can write a note in your child’s agenda. You
may also call me at school at 754-6300. My planning time is 12:25-1:15, so
that would be the best time to reach me. My email address is
mosesj@wcschools.com.I check it several times a day.

CONFERENCES
Parent-teacher conferences will be September 11th. If you would like to
schedule a conference at any other time, just let me know.

DRESS CODE
The dress code can be found in the agenda on page 8, and on the Stoner Creek
website. Please make sure your child follows dress code each day and has
their shirt tucked in so we can spend our class time learning.

FOLDERS
Each day your child will also bring home a homework folder with their daily
assignments. There will be a keep and return pocket. I will also be
placing graded and/ or checked assignments on the keep side. Please check
the folder daily for homework and letters from school. This folder needs to
be returned to school everyday.

Homework
Students will periodically have homework. Please check their folder and my
website for weekly homework.

Lunch
Our lunchtime is 11:50-12:20. Please feel welcome to come and eat with your
child. You can put money on your child’s lunchroom account on Mondays.
Weekly lunch tickets are $7.50. If you send a check, please make sure that
you include your child’s lunch code.

Money
Please send all money to school in an envelope with your child’s name, the
amount, and how the money is to be used.

SNACKS
We will have a morning snack each day. Children are responsible for
bringing their own snack. Please try to send a nutritious snack for your
child to enjoy. Since we have a water fountain in the classroom, no extra
drinks are necessary.

VOLUNTEERS
If you would like to volunteer in the classroom, please let me know. We
will need a team of room mothers with a leader to help plan parties and
special classroom events. We will also need volunteers to help children in
the classroom with individual testing and AR.
