Social Studies
We are studying Map Skills
(Please note that the below stated items and dates may be changed depending on the student's progress in each skill. I will not begin a skill until I am confident the students are ready to move on. Thank you!)
 
Monday Novemeber 30th- Talk about Columbus and his four voyages. We will also talk about how we can identify a map of Columbus' voyages. On a map, look for: 1492, 4 voyages, San Salvador (Guanahani), Carribbean Sea, Hispanoila, Bahamas, Cuba  
 
Tuesday December 1st- Talk about Balboa and his quest for adenture, power, glory and wealth. His map will contain items such as the South Sea (Pacific Ocean) and Panama
 
Wednesday December 2nd- Review Pizarro and his conquest of the Inca Empire. His map will have a route leading down from Panama to the West coast of South America in the Andes Mountains.
                                             Desoto will also be talked about. His map will contain any part of the southeastern portion of the United States. His journey took him from Florida into Georiga, South Carolina, North Carolina into the Appalachian Mountains and Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, through the Mississippi River (where he was buried) into Arkansas and Louisiana.
 
Thursday December 3rd- Computer Lab for two assignments
Agricultural Produce and Map Skills (It will not be available until this day.) We will put all the explorers together and analyze more maps.
Homework- Complete the Study Guide

Work on Study Island “Map Skills” to help practice identifying maps of explorers 

  1. If I were to look at a map of Columbus, what island would I be looking for?
  2. What was Columbus searching for?
  3. If I were to look at a map of anywhere in the SE US, who would I be looking at?
  4. If I were to look at a map of just Panama, who would I be looking at?
  5. If I were to look at a map of Pizarro, what would be on it?
  6. In what mountains did Pizarro travel through?
  7. In what mountains did Desoto travel through?
  8. Where were all of our explorers from?
  9. What is a conquistador?
  10. Name five things that happened to the Native Americans when the explorers started coming over? (This was also on our last test also.)
    Here's an example of a table. It gives information about different students in a class. Be able to answer questions using a chart.  For Practice questions, practice Study Island “Agricultural Produce”.

Extra Credit Opportunity
For every 20 questions the students complete in Study Island for topics assigned this 9 weeks, with an average of at least an 80- I will assign 1 extra credit point to be added to their lowest daily grade.

Study Island = for every 100 questions (with 80%) you get 10 tickets
