Spelling Words for Reading Class

Spelling study guide for the week of  January 28 - February 1

Our focus this week is adding prefixes un-, de-, dis- to a base word. Remember that addind a prefix changes the meaning of a word. Each of these prefixes means "the opposite of" or "not".

1. uncover - base word is cover - it has a schwa sounding o so be careful not to spell that with a u.
2. defrost - base word is frost - easy:)
3. uncomfortable - base word is comfortable - break the word into three syllables and it is easy: com - fort - able (the prefix makes it four syllables)
4. discourage - base word is courage - you will really need to study this one because it definitely doesn't spell the way it sounds
5. disadvantage - base word is advantage - break the work into four syllabes and it will be easy: dis - ad - van - tage (the last syllabe is the hardest)
6. unfortunate - base word is fortunate - break the word into four syllables: un - for - tu - nate  (the tu sounds like chu)
7. unfamiliar - base word is familiar - break the word into four syllables: un - fam - il -iar (this one is tough, be sure to practice writing it)
8. disability - base word is ability - break the word into five easy syllables: dis - a - bil - i - ty.
9. discomfort - base word is comfort which is the base of the base word in #3 above:)
10.deflate - this is the opposite of inflate - the word is easy to spell if you study.
