How to Raise a Caring Child

I think all of us want to children that are caring to themselves and others. Here are a few suggestions-

1. Talk about ways your family can help those that are less fortunate. Every year at Christmas, we collect toys and food for Big Brothers. some of our families "adopt" a Christmas angel. these are children in our area that need some help at Christmas. Encourage them to give!

2. Compliment your child on anything thoughtful that they do for someone else

3. Encourage your child to help with household chores (starting at a young age). At a family meeting, let him select jobs he wants to do. Always encourage them in positive ways.

4.Help your child to understand someone else's feelings-empathy. Talk about how characters in movies you watch feel, characters in books you read and in real life situations. How do you think Sue felt today when you won't share with her? Talk about a time they felt that way. What could you do next time so they don't feel sad?

5. Encourage an older child to seek neighborhood jobs such as raking leaves or shoveling snow.

6. Take your child on outings to nursing homes, children's hospitals. Let them spend time with someone that is sad or lonely.

7. Encourage them to write notes, make cards or care coupons to family members for illness, birthdays and etc

8. When your child is unkind to another child. Have them think how that made the child feel and have them apologize.

9. Encourage good manners. Saying thank you shows their gratitude.

10. You are their greatest role model! When you do caring and kind acts your children will too!!
