Why is there so little homework?
We 'practice' in the classroom as much as possible. When
academic work is done at home, sometimes there is too much
confusion and aggravation to make it worthwhile. We'd prefer to
avoid this as much as possible. Most homework will consist of
preparing for tests.
What do you expect from your students?
1. I expect students to be responsible- come to class with all
materials and prepared to learn.
2. I expect students to be respectful- to the school,
themselves, each other, and adults.
3. I expect students to be productive at all times- make the
most of the class and the school day.
4. I expect students to do what is right- follow school rules,
etc.
What is your grading policy?
Classwork 15%
Homework 15%
Quizzes 15%
Tests 30%
Six Weeks Test 25%
A zero on Powerschool denotes that a student was absent and needs
to make up that assignment. The zero will remain until the
assignment is completed and turned in to the teacher. Points will
not be deducted for make up work.
A 1 one Powerschool states that a student was present when an
assignment was given and chose not to complete the assignment. A
grade of 1 will not be changed. This includes work that is
left in the locker or at home. A zero will be given to a
student for communication of any kind during a quiz or test.
Assignments with answers only and no work is shown will not be
accepted. Ten points will be deducted for completing assignments
in a color other than pencil or black ink as well as neglecting
to put a name at the top of the paper.
What if my child is having difficulty with homework?
Please let me know! You can write a note or send an email. This
lets me know that your student tried to do the homework. I will
help your child at school and give them another chance to
complete that homework.
What is your bathroom policy?
The Questor team policy is that students may go to the bathroom
during class change. Students should put their books in their
next class and check with the teacher that there is adequate time
to go to the bathroom. There is typically enough time if the
door is still propped open, unless the teacher has already begun
class.
How do students find out what their make-up work is?
Students are responsible for getting their make-up work. Any
worksheets that were missed will have the student's name written
on it and will be in the Make up box. The student should ask the
teacher and check the website to make up quizzes or textbook
assignments.
The grade will be a zero until the work is completed and given to
the teacher.
How do students improve their grade?
Grades can be improved in several ways:
1.One of the best ways is to be in class and involved EVERY DAY!
Math builds on itself like a story. Missing something can have
negative consequences for a long time. Getting behind is a
definite grade killer.
2.Active participation and 100% effort will make a HUGE
difference. Do all of your work. Math skills are like basketball
skills or baseball skills. You can be out of practice. The more
you practice, the better, faster, and more accurate you will be.
This will make it easier to learn new, harder things. You'll also
remember it for longer and will perform better under pressure,
such as on a quiz or test.
3.Check your answers as you do your work. If you get a question
wrong, then go back and solve it until you get it right. Be sure
you understand what your mistake was.
4.Always show your work. Organized work leads to organized
thinking. Plus, if you get a question wrong, you can go back and
see why.
5.And finally, chat less and think more!
What about discipline?
If a student chooses to continually disrupt class or not complete
assignments, a conference will be scheduled with the student,
contact parents, or refer them to the office for additional
consequences.
How can I contact Mrs. Smith?
My email address is smithd@btcs.org and the school phone number
is
423.652.9449.
What about extra credit?
Students are welcome to attend the after school lab or Saturday
lab with Mr. Arnie. Students will receive an extra 100 homework
grade for every 30 minutes they spend doing math in the lab. To
receive credit, students are to print a report of the work
accomplished with their name, the date, the program and math
topic that they worked on, and most importantly, Mr. Arnie's
signature verifying this information. Students will receive
credit when they turn it in to their class period box.
Why does my child have a zero for an assignment?
Your child was absent. He needs to complete the assignment
and turn it in for a grade.
Why does my child have a one for an assignment?
Your child was present for class and:
1. Your child did not complete the assignment.
2. Your child completed the assignment, but did not put his name
on it. The assignment may be found in the "nameless" folder in
the back of the classroom. Your child may claim his paper, write
his name on it, and turn it in for a grade.
3. Your child wrote down answers but did not show work. Students
are required to show work on all assignments.
4. Your child may have completed the assignment, but neglected
to turn it in for a grade.
