| Champion Mini-School
TO THE PARENTS -------
We are excited about the upcoming year. We want to work with you to
make this the best year ever for your teenager. Feel free to let us know
when we can help or when you have questions. Additional information can be
found on our mini-school web-site. We can be reached by e-mail or at school
(758-5152). We suggest calling or e-mailing to set an appointment when
necessary in order to avoid conflicting schedules, though we find e-mail to
be more convenient.
The teachers in our mini-school believe that our objective is to educate
children.
We believe that in order for your child to meet the challenges that he or
she
will face in our society, the development of self-discipline and individual
responsibility is essential. Our goal is for each student to learn to be
responsible for his or her own actions and choices.

In addition, each student will have exploratory classes. Each
exploratory teacher will provide the information for his/her individual
class.
In an effort to improve communication with parents, each student is
being given a school agenda. Each student will be encouraged to write every
homework assignment and grade in this notebook. Your help is needed to
check
this at home and use it as a way of keeping track of your teenager’s grades,
assignments and comments from teachers.
STUDENT EXPECTATIONS
Listed below are the expected behaviors for our group. Failure to choose to
act in these ways will be considered a violation. On a demerit card
provided, the student will write exactly what he/she did in violation of the
expected behavior.
EXPECTED BEHAVIOR
1. Prompt-student seated and ready for class
2. Prepared-have paper, pen/pencil, and any other required materials
3. Participating-be on task and involved in class activities
4. Polite- speak to others respectfully, use appropriate language,
stay in mini-school area, control behavior in all areas of the building,
keep
area around desk clean, do not write on books, desks, or walls.
CONSEQUENCES OF YOUR WRONG CHOICES
More than 5 violations in one week results in the following:
1st time...........lunchroom detention for 1 day
2nd time.......... detention for 1 hour either before or
after school
3rd time........... classroom detention for 1 day
4th time & after...........referral to assistant principal
Once the 3rd consequence for excessive demerits has been served with
the mini-school, the student will be referred to the assistant principal.
Parents will still be notified by the teacher of the referral and the reason
it was given. In addition, extreme misbehavior may result in detention or
referral.
If a student receives more than 5 demerits beyond the amount
permitted for the reward, in the reward period and has not served a mini-
school consequence for excessive demerits, he/she will serve the next step
in
the discipline plan.
Detention will be held for one hour before or after school one day
per week at the convenience of parents and teachers. The student will be
assigned detention the week following the violations. Parents will be
notified in writing and given the choice of time the student will serve.
Afternoon detention will be held from 3:15-4:15 P. M. Morning detention
will
be held from 7:15-8:15 A. M. Students serving morning detention will need
to
report directly to the teacher’s outside door.
Out of Area
Champion students are expected to remain in our area of the building. Our
area consists of the locker area and the classroom hall. Champions are
never
to be in the Titan hall unless they have a pass from a Champion teacher
recorded in the agenda and/or a specific reason to visit a Titan teacher or
classroom. This also applies to the sixth and seventh grade areas of the
building as well as other areas. Champions are to enter the Champion
classroom pod through the hall by the copy room door and exit in the same
manner. Students who are out of area without permission will be
disciplined. Students scheduled for classes in one of these areas are
exempt
for that class period only.
E-mail
All WWMS teachers have email. Our addresses are listed on the cover
letter.
You are welcome and encouraged to contact us at any time during the school
day via this method. Please be advised that we may not be able to respond
immediately as our class schedule may not permit it. However, all
communications will be answered as soon as possible during school hours.
Returning Items to School
Throughout the school year students will be required by the school to take
forms, letters, grade checks, and other communications home to the parent
for
information and/or signatures. Students have three days to return said
items. After three school days, consequences will be enacted. The only
exception would be those forms which require student funds. Field trips are
not part of this policy as field trips have very specific due dates dictated
by the venue.
Classroom Distractions
As our primary focus in the classroom should always be academics, students
should leave non-related items in the locker. This includes but is not
limited to toys, gifts, sports items, or bags. Purses that can not be left
in the locker should remain on the floor by the student’s desk. Please see
the county policy regarding “wireless communication devices"
Grade checks are the property of the school and are kept on file by the
homeroom teacher. If a student must have a duplicate form issued and
completed by the teachers due to the student’s negligence or voluntary act,
consequences will follow.
REWARDS AND REWARD ACTIVITY
Students choosing to behave in the expected manner will be rewarded weekly.
These rewards will be given to students with no demerits for that week.
Our mini-school will arrange 2 activities per semester to reward good
behavior. As students mature throughout the year, the number of allowable
demerits will decrease. To participate in the first activity for good
behavior, students will be allowed no more than 14 demerits. For the second
and third periods, students may have no more than 12. For the fourth reward
period, students may earn a maximum of 10 demerits. Any student suspended
out of school during the reward period will not be allowed to participate in
the “special activity” as per school policy.
Students will be given a letter regarding each activity. For those able to
participate, the letter will supply information and request permission. For
those not able to participate, the letter will notify parents and explain
reason for not being able to attend. Students not participating in the
reward
activity will be given work to do at school. Students with an excused
absence
will be permitted to make up the work assigned.
It is important that we work together for the good of your child. Please
take the time to go over the rules, consequences and rewards given on the
preceding pages. Please sign below indicating that you have read and
understand the policies. We have also included the textbook agreement form
below.
Textbook Form: I hereby agree that I will be responsible for all free
textbooks used by my child. I hereby further agree that I will reimburse
the
Wilson County Board of Education for the value of any book or books
that are badly damaged, destroyed or misplaced which my child has
used during the scholastic year.
