Parents, we have begun a modified schedule.  A-days will be on Monday and Wednesday,  B-days will be on Tuesday and Thursday.  Fridays we will see both A and B day classes.

May 14-16: Read Chapter 4 pages 84-95.  Begin working on Chapter 4 vocabulary (16 words).  We will complete the last page of your vocabulary worksheet in class on Wednesday/Thursday. 

Friday, May 16 Chapter 4 Quiz over vocabulary worksheet. 

I will handout a studyguide for the Final Exam this Friday.  The remaining class periods will be used to prepare for the final exams on Friday, May 23 (A-day) and Tuesday, May 24 (B-day).

April 28 & 29 Lesson:  Birth of a Volcano.  How, where and why does magma form.  Why do valcanoes form in particular areas.  What does plate tectonics have to do with the location/formation of volcanoes.

Monday/Tuesday Locate volcanoes on a map.  Assignment due Wednesday/Thursday.

April 30 & May 1 Lesson: Workday, students use the class period to make-up any missing work.  No late work will be accepted after today. 

May 2 Lesson:  Types of Lava: Mafic and Felsic, Types of Pyroclastic material.  Compostion of Lava.

May 5-6 Lesson: Types of Pyroclastic Material, Types of volcanoes, Predicting Volcanoes.  Chapter 13 Vocabulary Quiz on May 5/6.  Chapter terms:  volcano, lava, pyroclastic material, sheild volcano, cinder cone volcano, composite volcano, crater, caldera, rift, and hot spot.

May 7-9 Dante's Peak Video.  Based on the information provided in class, record a minimum of 15 volcano related errors in the movie.

Wednesday/Thursday begin reading Chapter 13 pages 332-345.  Complete Chapter 13 workbook pages 98-105.  Due Friday, April 25 for A day students due Tuesday, April 29 for B-day students.

Objectives: Distinguish between nonexplosive and explosive volcanic eruptions.  Explain how the composition of magma determines the type of volcanic eruption that will occur.  Classify the main types of lava and volcanic debris.  Describe the effects that volcanoes have on Earth.  Compare the different types of volcanoes. Describe the formation and movement of magma.  Explain the relationship between volcanoes and plate tectonics.  Summarize the methods scientists use to predict volcanic eruptions.

 March 3 - 7  assignments: 

 1. Please read Chapter 8 pages 182-201.  Compete Chapter 8 vocabulary index cards, due March 4 (B-day-)  & March 5 (A-day). 

2. Workbook pages 51-58 due Feb 29 (B-day) & March 3 (A-Day).  Omit questions 1-3 on page 51.

3. Rock Cycle Drawing – Due Tuesday, March 4 (B-day) or Wednesday, March 5 (A-day)

 

Combine the diagrams on pages 184, 185 & 186 to draw the rock cycle.

Draw the Rock Cycle using colored pencils or colored markers on a ˝ sheet of poster board. 

The drawing must be in color. 

Write your name and class on the back of your drawing. 

Drawing is worth 100 points.

 

The drawing must include:

a.      All three types of rocks with their descriptions

b.      How each type of rock is formed

c.      Where each type of rock is formed (on the surface or beneath the surface)

d.      How rocks change from one form into another (show if the change is caused by heat, pressure, erosion or a combination)

e.      Draw arrows showing the direction of the changes and the processes involved

 

 

4.  Read and outline Chapter 11 pages 272 - 282.  We will focus on the Composition of the Earth, Structure of the Earth, Continental Drift and Plate Tectonics.

5.  Label the layers of the earth and draw the ten major tectonic plates.  We will work on this in class.  If we are unable to finish in class, it will be assigned as homework due on Thursday (B-day) & Friday (A-day).

6.  Chapter 11 open note quiz Thursday (B-day) & Friday (A-day).

 I passed out an Birthstone Extra Credit opportunity on Tuesday and Thursday.  The assignment is due February 21 (A-day) or February 22 (B-day).  No Exceptions!!!

Science Extra Credit (25 points)  

1.  Research the history of your birthstone.

2. Write a minimum 3/4 page typed report about your birthstone.  The typed report must be double spaced, using size 12 fonts.

3. Include as much information as possible about your birthstone for example: name, color or colors, hardness, history, special properties, uses, curses or superstitions. 

4. Include a picture or drawing of your birthstone on a separate piece of paper.

5.  The more information you provide the more points you will earn.

Do not copy and paste the information from the internet.  Use your own words.   

 

Wednesday(Feb 20) /Thursday (Feb21)  - Chapter 7 vocabulary quiz.  Following the quiz we will complete our Mineral Manuals and Lab.

Chapter 7 Test February 22(B-day), 25 (A-day)!!!!!!!

 Beginning on Monday students from the Titans and Champions Mini Schools will have a wonderful opportunity in Science! Mrs. Washing's students will begin going to Mr. Davis' Science class to cover the Chemistry part of the 8th grade curriculum and Mr. Davis' classes will begin going to Mrs. Washing for the Earth Science portion of the 8th grade curriculum. We tried this for the first time last year and it was a wonderful experience for all of our students. The switch will last through spring break.  Students will continue going to their other Titans and Champions mini-school teachers for their other classes, but will simply switch for the Science classes.-- RICA and Homerooms will also remain the same. Just simply wanted to let everyone know and if you have any questions, please see myself or Mr. Davis. I hope everyone has a terrific Super Bowl Weekend!!!

 Welcome Titans!  The Titans and I have begun our venture into Chapter 7 "Minerals".  Our first assignment is to complete vocabulary notecards.  The cards will be collected the day of our Chapter 7 test.  On February 6 (B-day) and 8 (A-day), I assigned Chapter 7 workbook pages 44-49.  This assignment is due Monday, Feb 11 B-day, and Tuesday 12 A-day.  Also on Feb 12 & 13 we will have a Chapter 7 vocabulary quiz.  Please remind your students to study!!  We will conduct a Mineral Identification Lab on February 12 & 13.  

Be on the lookout for an extra credit opportunity next week.

We will have a quiz over sections 1 and 2 on Wednesday Jan 9 (A-day), Thursday, Jan 10 (B-day).   

Chapter 11 Test Thursday Jan 17 (A-day), Friday Jan 18 (B-day).  Students received a study guide on Friday, Jan 11 for  A-day and on Monday Jan 14 for B-day. 

Chapter 11 assignments include: Labeling the Compostional layers and Physical layers of the Earth, drawing in tectonic plates and boundaries, Ch 11 Quiz, Ch 11 Study Guide and Ch 11 test.

Mr. Davis and I will be switching class around Jan 29 following the completion of Chapter 9 .  Your child will simply report to Mr. Davis's class during this time and return to my class at the end of the 3rd nine weeks grading period.  During their time with Mr. Davis students will cover the chemistry portion of our textbook in chapters 19, 20, & 21. 

IMPORTANT DATES:  DEC 13 &14 are Mid-Term Exams.  Students will be reponsible for information presented from Chapters: 7, 8, 9, 15, 16, & 17.  We will have a review day on Dec 11 & 12.  Please make sure your child is here on those days.  The Mid-Term Exam counts as 10% of their grade!!!

 Journey to the Center of the Earth!

Due Date:  Thursday, December 6 (B-day) & Friday, December 7 (A-day)

 

Directions:  Write a story describing your own “Journey to the Center of the Earth”. 

                    Your story is worth 200 points.  I will not accept a homework pass for this

                     assignment.

 

To receive full credit your story must:

1.      Mention the five “Physical Layers of the Earth” including descriptions and characteristics of all the five “Physical Layers of the Earth” during your travels.

2.      Be legible.  You may type or write the story.  If you type the story it must be one full page in length (not including pictures), size 12 font, 2” top margin, 1” right, left and bottom margins.  If you write the story it must be a minimum of one and a half (1˝) pages in length (not including pictures). 

3.      Include a minimum of four paragraphs (introduction, body, and conclusion).

4.      You may draw pictures to accompany your story; this will earn you additional points.

5.      Use your imagination by including encounters with mad scientists, unusual animals, dragons, aliens etc. 

   

Attention Parents:  2nd Mid-9 Week Reports went home on Thursday, Nov 15.  Students  please have your parents sign the report and return it to your homeroom teacher by Tuesday, Nov 20.

Science Rocks!!  Yes we have begun Chapter 8 - Rocks.  Please read Chapter 8 pages 182-201.  I have assigned a Vocabulary worksheet and a Rock Cycle Drawing.  We worked on the assignments in class, if you didn't finish they are assigned for homework.  Both assignments are due Monday, Nov 19 (B-day) and Tuesday, Nov 20 (A-day).   

Chapter 8 Vocabulary Quiz - Monday, Nov 26 (B-day) and Tuesday, Nov 27 (A-day).  THERE WILL NOT BE A WORD BANK, STUDY!!!! 

Prepare for Chapter 8 Test on Nov 28 & 29.

We have completed Chapter 17 and now have shifted gears from Physical Science to Earth Science.  We began Chapter 7 with the study of minerals.  Students are to read all of Chapter 7 before Friday, November 9.  We will have a quiz over the 15 vocabulary words on Thursday, Nov 8 (A-day), Friday, Nov 9 (B-day).  Students will complete a mineral identification lab on Thursday and Friday following their quiz.  Test over Chapter 7 will be on Monday, November 12 for A-day and Tuesday, November 13 for B-day. 
 
 
Yet another  EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITY!!!  All students may research their birthstone.  See Mrs. Washing for your instructions.  The assignment is worth a maximum of 25 points. 
 
  Chapter 17 assignments:  Newton's Laws of Motion Project, Read Chapter 17 Section #1 pages 452-458.  Gravity worksheet is due Friday, October 19 for A-day, Monday, October 22 for B-day.  Read Chapter 17 pages 459-467.  Momentum worksheet was completed in class.

Chapter 17  Quiz:  Monday October 29 (A-day), Thursday November 1 (B-day).  The quiz will include chapter 17 vocabulary and students must know how to use all of the formulas mentioned in chapter 17.  They include the formulas for: momentum, force/acceleration/mass, velocity of falling objects.

Chapter 17 Project: Newton's Laws of Motion.  Students received a rubric for their Newton's Laws of Motion project before the fall break.  The project is due on October 29 for A-day and October 30 for B-day.   

Extra Credit Opportunity!!!  Attend the Clean Air Fair at Charlie Daniels Part on Saturday, October 20 between 10:00 am - 3:00 pm.  Collect at least two brochures from the sponsors of the fair, bring them to me on Monday, October 22, and you will earn 20 extra credit points. 

Welcome back to school, I hope you enjoyed your time off.  We begin the 2nd 9 weeks grading period on Monday, October 15. 

FYI, your Arithmatic Worksheet, Ch. 16 Study Guide and Ch. 16 Test will be recorded in your 2nd 9 weeks grade.  If you havn't turned in your Arithmatic Worksheet and/or Ch. 16 Study Guide they are due by Tuesday October 16.  No exceptions!!!   Ch. 16 test make-up day is Tuesday October 16.  It is your responsibility to arrange a time to make-up any missing work. 

I am offering a Ch. 16 Test Re-take.  If you would like to re-take the test you must do so by Thursday, October 18.

Sept. 17/18 we are beginning Chapter 16.  Assignment for Mon (A-day) & Tues (B-day): Read Ch 16 sections 1 & 2 (pages 420 - 430).

Sept 20 & 21, finish reading Chapter 16 pages 431 - 441.  Assignments remaining for Chapter 16 include:  Chapter 16 Study Guide,

Arithmetic using Decimals worksheet, Chapter 16 Test and your folder with the 1st nine weeks of bellringers.

Chapter 16 Test will be open book.  The test dates are Thursday, Sept. 27 (A-day) and Friday, Sept 28 (B-day).

I will no longer accept any late work from Ch 15 after Sept. 17 (A-day) or Sept. 18 (B-day).  Late work  receives a maximum grade of 75%.
