Dear Parents,
I hope everyone enjoyed the long holiday weekend and the disappointing UT
game last night! There are several upcoming items that will need your
immediate attention this week.
Fall Pictures will be this Friday. The pictures are PRE-PAY only and the
order forms are in today’s folder. Orders and money will need to be turned
in by Friday, September 5, 2008.
In today’s folder are the “Alert Now” forms. These forms should be filled
out and returned as soon as possible. These forms are for emergency/alert
calls to be made directly to you.
Scholastic Book Orders are due on Wednesday, September 3, 2008. Please make
your checks payable to Scholastic Book Clubs.
T-Shirt orders are due back by Friday, September 5, 2008. Even if you are
not ordering a shirt, please return the order envelope marked “No”. Thanks!
There are some forms for Highlights magazine’s in today’s folder. Please
fill it out, even if you mark “No” and return it back to me. If I can get at
least 15 back, we can get some FREE things for the classroom.
If your child is participating in the school fundraiser, all orders and money
need to be turned in on Monday, September 15, 2008. Orders will be delivered
on Wednesday, October 8, 2008.
Thanks you for all the food donations that were made to Store House
Ministries. Even though Wartburg didn’t win the Food Drive, it all went to a
very worthy cause. Thanks again!
The FREE Breakfast program has been extended through the entire month of
September! Please encourage your child to eat a good breakfast to start
their day off right!
I have several announcements for you this week, so please mark your calendar
for these upcoming events.

• Parent Teacher Conferences and Open House will be, Thursday,
September 18, 2008, from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. I encourage each of you to
attend. PTO will be hosting a Chili Supper that night as well.
• Fall Break will be October 13-17, 2008. There will be NO SCHOOL
during this week.
• Report cards will be sent home on Wednesday, October 22, 2008.
My email here at school is mehlhornh@mcsmail.net ,if you would like to send
me any notes or information about your child, instead of trying to call me.
My Teacher Web page is updated and available for you to use. The address is
http://www.teacherweb.com/TN/WartburgCentralElementary/HannahMehlhorn/
I will do an update at least once a week. If you would like for my webpage
to automatically e-mail you with any updates, please send me your e-mail
address and I will get it set up.
This week in reading will be reading The Lost and Found on pages 90-117.
Please try to read the story with your child every night. The vocabulary and
definitions that go with the story are:
directions – lines or paths along which someone or something goes, lies, or
points
rumpled – wrinkled or creased
situations – sets of conditions at certain moments in time
unusual – not usual, common, or ordinary
visible – able to be seen
worried – concerned or anxious
We will have a vocabulary test over the definitions on Thursday.
The spelling words for this week will focus on the vowel-consonant-e
pattern. We will have a test on Wednesday and if the student doesn’t make a
100, they will retake it on Friday of this week.

In English, we will be studying types of sentences, nouns and verbs, and
subjects and predicates.
In math, we are working on Chapter2 on Comparing, Ordering, and Rounding
Numbers. We will also be working on the doubles. Please study and work on
these with your child. The doubles are:
1+1=2 4+4=8 7+7=14
10+10=20
2+2=4 5+5=10 6+6=12
11+11=22
3+3=6 6+6=12 8+8=16
12+12=24
In science, we will be studying Chapter 1 on Plants.
In social studies, we will be studying where we live. It is very important
that your child know their street address and home phone number. I will be
giving a test on this information near the end of this unit. Please be
working on this with your child.
Have a great week!
Thanks!
