To Parents and Students, welcome to 3rd grade! Upfront, we would like to
say that your child’s responsibilities have greatly grown. Many new skills
and concepts are taught in 3rd grade. Therefore, your child may experience
difficult hurdles from time to time. It is a big jump from 2nd grade. With
your consistent cooperation and support, this can be a very successful
school year.

School Hours:
Students may arrive at school no earlier than 7:30 a.m. Breakfast is served
from 7:45 to 8:20. Students may enter the classroom at 8:00 a.m., but not
before. Class begins promptly at 8:30 and ends at 3:15, and not before.
After 3:30, students are not to go back to their classroom for any reason.

Tennessee State Law:
State law prohibits visitors from entering the building through side or back
doors. You must enter through the front door and go directly to the
office. If you need to come to the room or anywhere else in the building
for any reason, you must first get a visitor’s pass from the office.
Teachers will enforce this for the safety of each person in our school. If
you drop your children off in the morning or pick them up in the afternoon,
everyone should enter and exit through the front doors.

Absences/Tardies/ Early Dismissals:
Attendance is very important to your child’s success in 3rd grade. Tardies
and early dismissals are also included in this success. As we stated
before, 3rd grade is a very difficult grade level and attendance is on of
the largest factors for your child’s success.

School begins at 8:30 a.m. Students who are tardy are missing a vital part
of instruction. Each class receives special awards for excellence in
attendance.

When students are absent, they need to bring a note the next day. They
should show it to their teacher and then take it to the office. Students
are allowed 3 home notes (3 days of absences with a parent note) per
semester. After 3 home notes have been used, only a note from the doctor
will be accepted. After a student returns from his/her absence, they will
have 3 days to make up their work.

Three points will be added at the end of each nine weeks to a students grade
if they have perfect attendance (no absences, no tardies, and no early
dismissals). They will receive two points if they have 1 absence, and one
point for 2 absences.

Grading Scale:
A------------------------93 – 100
B------------------------85 – 92
C------------------------75 – 84
D------------------------70 – 74
F-----------------------Below 70

Medicine:
All medicine must be taken to the clinic. Teachers ARE NOT allowed to give
ANY KIND OF MEDICATION. Parents must take it to the nurse and fill out a
form for it to be dispensed to your child. Please do not send it to your
child’s teacher. She will not be able to help!!

Contacting Teachers:
Please feel free to contact your child’s teacher at school. The number is
346-6683. The secretary will transfer the call or give her a message and
your call will be returned as soon as possible. Teachers will not meet with
anyone during the school day unless an appointment has been scheduled in
advance. Teachers are with students from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Unannounced visits take away from the students and their education.
Appointments can be scheduled before 8:00 a.m. or after 3:30 p.m.; however,
meetings need to be scheduled in advance.

Field Trips:
Field trips are a privilege, not a requirement. Students can lose the
privilege of going on a field trip if they cannot conduct themselves in an
appropriate manner at school.

Prior to all field trips, teacher will share information about the trip and
would like to personally speak with anyone who will be chaperoning on the
trip. This will create less confusion on the day of the trip. Parents
attending the field trip will need to provide their own transportation.

Accelerated Reading:
Accelerated Reading is a school-wide program that helps students improve
their reading comprehension skills. This is an independent reading
program. Students choose their own books, read them on their own, and take
tests when they are ready.

Bulldog Folders:
Every Monday, each student will bring home a blue bulldog folder with the
previous weeks graded work. Please review the papers, take them out, sign
and return the empty folder on Tuesday. If your child receives a grade of
76 – o on any work, please sign the paper and return it in the folder. From
time to time, you will receive other forms of communication in the folders.
Please take the time to read the information in the folders. If your
signature is needed, please complete the information, sign, and return in
the folder.

Homework:
Your child’s homework each week will consist of reading the Reading story,
studying the Reading vocabulary definitions and Spelling words, memorizing
math facts, studying for chapter tests, and reading Accelerated Reading.
Occasionally, students will be assigned outside projects to be completed at
home. However, additional homework is not assigned unless your child does
not use his/her time wisely in class.

Late Work:
Ten points will be deducted every day that an assignment is late up to 3
days. After that, a zero will be recorded.

No Name Papers:
Any student who does not put their name on their paper will have 10 points
deducted from their grade.

Restroom:
If your child has a medical problem resulting in more frequent restroom
breaks, please send a written note from your doctor. This note will be
placed in the teacher’s files.

Snack:
Snack is a privilege. Students are not required to have a snack, but we
feel it is important for students to have that little extra advantage. I
ask that students bring a snack from home on Monday through Thursday, but
may go to the cafeteria and purchase snack on Friday.

Recess:
Recess is an extra opportunity for students to have a short break from the
daily routine. We will have recess on most days, but we do not have to have
it on days that we have special classes.
