Keyboarding

We begin with the basics in Keyboarding. Students that have had keyboarding
instruction in the middle school grades may initially progress at a faster
pace. However, prior keyboarding instruction is not required.

Much emphasis is placed on learning to keyboard using the proper fingers and
using the correct ergonomic position while using the computer. Students use
a software program called MicroType4 to cover or review the various
reaches for each of the alphbetic and numeric keys. The ability to "touch"
type without watching the keyboard or one's fingers is expected from all
students.

Students are timed for speed during the last half of the semester. One-
minute, two-minute, and three-minute timings are given using the MicroType4
software. Students are expected to be able to type quickly, yet accurately
as they strive for higher and higher speeds.

Students learn document formatting using Word 2003. They save their work on
the school's networked server using a unique user name and password. Work is
completed during class time.

Units of study in Word include:  editing; keyboard shortcuts; centering;
bulleted and numbered lists; tables; graphics; personal & business letters;
MLA formatting style for outlines, reports, and works cited;

Units of study in Excel include:  editing; keyboard shortcuts; sorting data;
preparing charts & graphs

Units of study in Powerpoint include: proper design of slide shows;
presentation features & shortcuts;

Culminating activites encourage students to integrate the various Office
programs as needed to complete given tasks.
