What are the team guidelines?

We expect every player to come to class ready to learn and participate.
While misbehavior is rarely a problem when players are engaged and
interested in what they are doing, occasionally incidents occur. For minor
fouls, we will have the player sign his name in a discipline log
book. After three strikes (signatures), he/she gets placed in the penalty
box (ISS). For major issues we will refer the student to the office and/or
inform his personal trainers (parents) as soon as possible.

Why does Coach Crawford let students choose their own reading material?

As a former elementary teacher, I was dismayed when I asked my first group
of middle school players how they felt about reading. They told me that
reading was no longer something they enjoyed for three main reasons. First,
there was no time to read. Homework, sports, lessons, and other obligations
prevented them from having the free time they needed to read. Secondly,
they said that the older they got, the more “academic stuff” (vocabulary,
comprehension questions, quizzes and tests to go along with the book) was
expected of them. Finally, the books they read were chosen by their
teachers. To me, this is similar to enjoying a chocolate cake by eating the
ingredients one at a time. Books are meant to be savored and enjoyed as a
whole, not picked apart word by word. For this reason, I have set aside one
day a week to be a “Free Choice” day. On Fridays, players are expected to
bring literature from home to read for the entire class period. My number
one goal for my players is to instill in them a love for reading. I have
found that providing them the
opportunity to read books of their own choosing and giving them time in
class to savor them goes a long way toward achieving that goal.

Is this really "the party team"?

Ask any 8-3 survivor and he/she will tell you that we all are expected to
work hard both on and off the field. While we do admit to loving what we do
and having fun while we do it, our objective is to be prepared for the game
of life. If that's what you call a party, then, sure, I guess we are!

Why is the Reading field (classroom) so cold?

So our young female players will cover themselves up! Seriously, because my
thermostat is locked and they didn't give me a key!

classroom could attest.

What is the secret word for this week?

Check back often for the secret word. You may earn extra points just for
checking the "playbook."

What is your favorite class of the day and why?

Our favorite class of the day
is the one (or more) in which the "magic" happens. We know y'all know what
we're talking about. It's when every single person in the room is focused
on what we're doing. You know, it happens when you can feel yourself
thinking about things in a way you've never thought of them before that
moment. It's like we're all suspended in time. You've been there. When
the "MAGIC" happens, it always makes for our favorite class. Thanks for the
question, Samantha!
