Classroom Contract

Each student is responsible for following the class rules as stated:

No chewing gum, eating or drinking in the classroom.

Because this is a language class, students will be speaking on a daily basis.  It is difficult enough learning a new language without trying to speak with gum, food or drinks in their mouth.  This will also eliminate the potential for spills and trash on the floor.

Bring all needed materials to class.

Once textbooks have been issued, students will be required to bring the textbook, notebook and all given handouts to class.

Be in your seat and ready to work when the bell rings.

We will have a lot of material to cover in this class.  Students will have daily homework and multiple quizzes (2-3) throughout the week.  The more time that I have available to teach allows me to further concrete the vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation.

Obtain permission before speaking or leaving your seat.

While this is a participatory class, I do request that students raise their hand to ask questions and request permission to leave their seats.

Respect others, yourself and school property.

Each student is deserving of respect.  Not just from myself, but from each other.  I will not tolerate students criticizing, belittling or laughing at another student.  Having respect for yourself mandates that you present yourself in a professional and positive light.  Each student has something to offer to this class.  Each student has a gift or talent that will allow her or him to excel.

Students who violate these rules will be disciplined within the class accordingly.  If the behavior problem continues, I will personally contact the student’s parent or guardian to request a conference.  I do assign morning and afternoon detention with me for inappropriate behavior in class.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I acknowledge that by signing this contract that I am aware of the listed class rules and the consequences for not abiding by them.  I take full responsibility for my actions and class participation requirements.

Grading Policy

Each student’s final grade will be derived from the following percentages:

            Tests – 40%

Students can expect to have a test every one to two weeks over the material covered.  Advance notice of test days and content will be given to ensure adequate study time.  I encourage parents to assist their children in preparing.  Not only is this a way for parents to learn the basics of the Spanish language, but also to further concrete the language and vocabulary for the students.

            Quizzes – 30%

Quizzes will be given weekly.  This is to ensure that the students are learning the material as we go along.  I do not believe in “pop” quizzes.  All classes will be given the quiz material one to two days before the quiz.  A review will be given in class before each quiz.

            Homework – 20%

Each student is responsible for completing and bringing homework to class.  Failure to do so will result in a 0 for the homework assignment.  Students can expect to have an assignment every day (in and out of class assignments/homework, and study time for tests and quizzes).

            Participation – 10%

Students will receive a weekly participation grade.  This grade will reflect the time that students are attentive in class, prepared when called upon and on task.  In relation, failure to bring their assigned textbook to class and/or sleeping during my class will result in a lower grade.

I do not allow students to retake quizzes or tests.  The grade that is received is the grade that will be reflected on the progress report.  In addition, I do not accept late homework for partial credit.  When an assignment is given, it will be covered the next day in class.  In addition, if a student is caught copying another student’s homework then both the student who is copying, and the student who let the other student copy their work, will receive a 0 for that grade.

I do offer opportunities for extra credit throughout the course of the semester.  I advice students to take advantage of these opportunities as they are offered because I will not let students do extra credit at the end of the semester in order to squeak by.

In order to keep parents or guardians aware of each student’s progress, I will send home a current progress report after each test given.  You can expect to receive a progress report a minimum of every two weeks.  Progress reports should be signed and returned to me the next day.

Each student will have a folder with his or her work (quizzes, tests and homework).  If you wish to review your child’s folder, please contact me for a conference.

I am also available for morning tutoring Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7:30 a.m. and on Wednesdays from 3:15 – 3:45.  In addition, if you or your child needs any assistance on homework and/or quiz/test requirements, I can be reached at my home number listed on the other side after 7:00 p.m.

Thank you for your time, and I look forward to a rewarding year,
