We are working on Unit 5 - Regional Civilizations and Empires. This includes the following chapters:
The Rise of Islam
African Civilizations
American Civilizations
Civilizations of Asia
We will be celebrating the Chinese New Year on Monday, schedule and weather permitting. I have
asked for volunteers to send in the following:
fried rice (have a commitment for 2 crock pots of fried rice), along with serving cups/bowls
Chinese Zodiac placemats - possibly donated by a Chinese restaurant
chopsticks
a parent has volunteered to provide a box of fortune cookies
drinks
Although Monday was originally scheduled as a holiday (President's Day), it was decided that it would
be a regular school day. Students will also learn about the history of Valentine's Day.
We will work on a project about World Religions in class next week. I feel this is a good learning
experience in relation to the standards and curriculum as far as teaching about the five major world
religions.
If your child is looking for the opportunity to bring his/her Social Studies grade up, extra credit is
always encouraged. I will accept anything that shows a student has spent time learning about what is
currently being taught, such as dioramas, posters, mobiles, reports, models, etc...
Almost all quizzes and tests are open book. I expect students to be able to effectively use the
resources available to them. It is disappointing to see some students fail a quiz or test due to not
taking the time to find the answers that are available in the textbook.
We could really use some help with filing! We would greatly appreciate any help you can offer.
