Academic Common Market: A program whereby students can attend Out-Of-State Colleges for In-State Tuition. Sixteen states in southern region participate in the academic common market to allow students to attend neighboring states for in-state tuition if a major course of study in not offered. Check out www.sreb.org/acm.asp for details of which majors and which institutions participate and the application procedures to receive the reduced rates. COLLEGE VISITS

Periodically college and career recruiters visit the College and Career Center adjacent to the Guidance Office to visit with students and/or parents. Visits will be from 8:00-8:30 at the College and Career Center or 11:45-1:30 in the West Mall in front of the Cafeteria. Please take advantage of these times to visit personally with recruiters to ask specific questions and obtain valuable information.

Area Forums:  Colleges and Universities will sometimes visit areas with area forums to incorporate several schools in a given region.  We are aware of the following forums at this time.


OPEN HOUSES

Colleges and Universities often have Open Houses in the fall term to allow students and parents an on-campus opportunity to meet with staff, visit facilities and talk with students. Remember to use a campus visit day, notes for visits must be submitted to Dr. Bartlett in the West Mall Office prior to the visit. SPECIAL COLLEGE EVENTS AND NEWS

Colleges periodically make us aware of special events that occur on their campus that might be important to admissions and scholarships.


SCHOLARSHIPS

Nominations: Bearden is often asked to nominate students for selected scholarships and awards. Sometimes we can nominate several, sometimes only one. Many of these nominations will have specific criteria - certain GPA, PSAT, SAT or ACT scores or Athletic honors. We usually solicit interested students, so that we can match students of interest with institutions of interest. For example, Emory Scholars candidates would be students planning on attending Emory University. Students wishing to be considered for specific nominations MUST see Mrs. Slabbekorn to be put in the pool of potential students to nominate. IF they are selected, their counselor will notify them and provide information on the next step.

Toyota Community Service Scholarship - one nomination from Bearden to a senior who best exemplifies the outstanding academic leadership and dedication to community service the scholarship seeks to recognize. Must have a minimum GPA of 3.0, be actively involved in a service organization or project that has a psitive impact on the school or community, be a US citizen, US national, or US permanent residents, plan to pursue an undergraduate degree at an accredited four-year college or university in the US. Not available to children or grandchildren of Toyota Motor Sales, USA Inc. or other Toyota subsidiaries or Toyota and Lexus deal principals. If you would like to be considered for nomination, see Mrs. Slabbekorn by November 17, 2008. Deadline: December 1, 2008

Scholarships: The majority of scholarship monies will come from the colleges the student applies. The information posted here will be private or independent scholarship information of which we are made aware. If a website is provided, you are encouraged to seek the information directly from that website. Otherwise, information and applications may be located in the Scholarship File Cabinet in the College and Career Center. WATCH DEADLINES!

Art Institutes - Fashion Scholarship - Full or partial scholarships to one of the 40 Art Institutes of Design for potential students enrolling in the Fashion Design or Fashion Marketing & Merchandising and Retail Management programs. More information at www.artinstitutues.edu/passionforfashion. Deadline: November 21, 2008

State of Tennessee - Securities Division - sponsores an essay contest for high school seniors in Tennessee. Students will be asked to write an essay on the subject of financial literacy and investor education. Two winners each from East, Middle and West Tennessee for $1,500 and $1,000 savings bonds respectively. More information available at www.tn.gov/commerce/securities or in the college and career scholarship office. Deadline: November 28, 2008

Tennessee Concrete Association Essay Scholarship - Students must write an essay not to exceed 600 words on the benefits of concrete. State and Regional Scholarship winners of $150 move on to compete as a national winner for $2,000. If the student enrolls in a concrete major such as offered at MTSU, then a $5,000 scholarship may be earned. Applications available in the college and career center. Deadline: December 1, 2008

Oglethorpe University Scholarship Weekend - Apply for admission to Oglethorpe University by December 15th to be invited to scholarship weekend to compete for scholarships worth up to $113,000 plus study abroad. Apply at www.admission.oglethorpe.edu Deadline: December 5, 2008

Gates Millennium Scholars - Scholarship by the Gates Foundation for African-American, American Indian/Native Alaskan, Asian Pacific Islander American ro Hispanic American who is a citizen or legal permenent resident or national of the US and who has cumulative unweighted GPA of 3.3 who will enroll in college for the fall of 2009. The student should meet eligibility for Pell Grant money by filing a FAFSA and have all three nomination forms completed by the deadline. Paper applications are available from Mrs. Slabbekorn or on-line applications at www.gmsp.org. Deadline: December 15, 2008

Alcoa Aluminum's 2009 Sons and Daughters Scholarship Program - up to 100 4-year scholarships and 50 2-year scholarships of up to $1,500 per year renewable for children of Alcoans to continue their education after high school. Only sons and daughters of permanent, full time, active US based emplyees of Alcoa Inc. are elibigle to apply. Stepchildren living in the Alcoa employee's household and legally adopted grandchildren are also eligible. Students may apply on-line at www.act.org/alcoafoundation. Deadline: January 14, 2009

University of Memphis Emerging Leaders Scholarship Program - 4-year renewable scholarship beyond financial assistance which provides training and opportunities designed to contribute significantly to a balanced and well rounded college experience. Students attned classes, workshops, lectures, perform community service and become engaged, content and confident University of Memphis Tigers. Applications can be obtained at http://saweb.memphis.edu/leadership/emerginleaders.htm Deadline: January 15, 2009

Burger King Scholars Program - $11.7 million in scholarships to deserving graduating seniors throughout the US. $1,000 awards each to be used for educational expenses, such as tuition, fees, and books during the first year of college or post secondary covational/technical school. For a student to qualify, he/she must be a high school senior and a US resident that meets our criteria. To obtain information about eligibility criteria, please visit our Web Site at www.bk.com/scholars. Applicants must be seniors with a minimum of 2.5 GPA who have worked part-time an average of 15 hours per week for 40 weeks per year, be active in community service activities and demonstrate need. Applicants do not have to have been employed by Burger King. Deadline: February 2, 2009

Knoxville Post Office Credit Union Scholarship - Three $1,000 scholarships awarded to members of the Post Office Credit Union. Must have a savings account, checking account, or debit card with applicant's name as primary member. Open to new accounts. Student must be planning on attending a 4-year or 2-year college or technical school. Applications available in the College and Career Center Scholarship Drawer. Deadline: February 2, 2009

Art Institutues - Culinary Arts Scholarship - Top Chef competition for nine scholarships for full tuition to the Art Institutes in Culinary Arts. Official rules available at www.artinstitutes.edu/BTC Deadline: February 6, 2009

KFC Colonel's Scholars Program - a scholarship program offered by Kentucky Fried Chicken to a student graduating from high school by the end of this summer with a 2.75 minimum GPA , enrolling in a 2-year or 4-year public university pursuing a bachelor's degree. Up to $5,000 per year renewable. Applications available at www.kfcscholars.org After December 1, 2008. Deadline: February 10, 2009.

Auburn University - National Science Foundation Scholarship - from The National Science Foundation, through the Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathmematics program, has awarded the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering's AT & T Minority Engineering Scholarship for individuals that are under-represnted in engineering, including African-American, Hispanic, Native American, Pacific Islander and female students. Renewable scholarship from $5,000 - $10,000 will be provided to students based on financial need, as well as academic merit and potential. The scholarships are available to both Alabama residents and non-residents. The scholarships are renewable for up to four years, providing satisfactory academic progress in the student's chosen engineering discipline is maintained. UT - Chattanooga - Grote Chemistry Scholarship - 4-year renewable scholarships added to other university scholarships for students with a minimum GPA of 3.5 and an ACT of 26 who plan on declaring Chemistry as a major. Must apply to UTC and be admitted by February 1, 2009. Separate on-line application at http://utc.edu/Chemistry Deadline: March 1, 2009

Mu Alpha Theta Scholarship - for outstanding seniors in good standing of an active Mu Alpha Theta Chapter (Math Honor Club) and will be continuing their study of mathematics in college in their career field. Up to ten $4,000 scholarships are available each year and awarded to the recipient's college or university of choice to be used for tuition, fees, and books. Applications available in the Scholarship Drawer Deadline: March 15, 2009

Tennessee School of Beauty Scholarship - tuition scholarships in Cosmetology for high school seniors, male and female, interested in a career in the field of Cosmetology. Selection will be based on biographical statement of the applicant's educational history, contribution to the school, plans for the future, and why he/she would like to study Cosmetology. Consideration given to those students with special financial needs. Applications in the Scholarship Drawer Deadline: March 31, 2009
