Physical Science Syllabus

Physical Science
Mrs. Allen

Welcome back! I am excited that you are in my class and am looking forward
to a very successful semester. Hopefully this information will answer any
questions you may have concerning this class.

Course Description: This is a general introductory course to chemistry and
physics, including the study of atomic structure, forces and motion,
conservation of energy, and interactions of matter and energy.

End of Course Test: At the end of the semester, students will complete the
Physical Science End-of-Course exam. This test is administered to all public
high schools in the state of Tennessee. This exam will count 15% of the
final semester grade. All of the topics studied throughout the semester will
be covered on the test.

Required Supplies: 1 1/2- 2” three-ringed binder, loose-leaf notebook paper
(no spiral notebooks), dividers(6), pencil (no pens), $5.00 lab fee

Grading System: Student grades will comprise of 40% test average and 60%
daily average. Daily grades consist of classwork, homework,
quizzes, and labs. Semester exams are one-fifth of the semester grade.

All tests and graded assignments will be returned for you to see. You can
always know what grade you are making. After reviewing the graded tests, I
will keep them on file. All other assignments will be kept in the students’
binders and a notebook grade will be given at the end of each grading
period. This will count as a test grade.

Grading Scale: A = 100-93	B = 92-85	C = 84-75	D = 74-70
	F = 69-0

Classroom Standards: Students will:
1.	come to class on time and be prepared.
2.	be respectful to others/themselves, and school/personal property.
3.	be responsible. You will be held accountable for your assignments,
make-up work, and behavior. Please make wise choices.

Disciplinary Procedures: The teacher will:
1.	give a warning (either silently or verbally).
2.	have a conference with the student. “Write offs” may be assigned.
3.	send the student to the office.
4.	send a note home and/or call a parent or guardian.
** In some cases, the first two steps will be bypassed and a direct
referral to the office will occur**
**Tardiness will be handled according to school policy.**

Classroom Procedures:
1.Bell-work – Students are to enter the classroom, take their seats,
and complete the bell-work assignment for the day in the bell-work section
of their binders. There may be other information or directions to follow as
well. These do not have to be written down in their binders.
2.Turning in work – Students will place their work in the assigned
basket unless other instructions are given ahead of time.
3.Borrowing pencils – Students need to be prepared for class by having
all materials needed. If a student needs to borrow a pencil, he/she may do
so by getting one from the pencil holder and leaving a dime deposit. If the
student returns the pencil, then his/her deposit will be returned. If the
pencil is not returned, the student forfeits the deposit and buys the pencil.
4.Answering in class – Students will not yell out answers in class.
Students will raise their hand and/or I will recognize someone.
5.Attention – When you see fingers ‘counting down’, immediately “stop,
look, and listen”.
6.Restroom/Water breaks – Please tend to these needs prior to class.
Exceptions will be made for students with medical excuses from their doctor
or in emergency situations.
7.Assignment due dates – All assignments are to be turned in on time.
If an assignment is not turned in, a zero will be recorded. Assignments not
turned in by the time it is due, will result
in a penalty grade. The student may turn in an assignment up to one day late
for a grade of no higher than a 70, unless we graded it in class. After an
assignment has been graded and returned, no late grade will be given, so I
urge you to do all assignments on time.
8.Make-up work – Each student is responsible for his/her make-up work.
A make-up folder will be located in the classroom with any missed worksheets
or notes. Students are to obtain their work from this folder. All other
missed work will be on the Table of Contents board. If a test or quiz was
given the first day absent, it will be made up the first day returned. Make-
up tests and quizzes will be given before or after school in Mrs. Jennings’
room. If you ride a bus or can not be at school during these times, please
let me know. Do not assume I know why a test or quiz is not made up. For all
other missed work, you will have one day for every day missed, plus one.
Students are responsible for getting the bell-work missed, as well.
9.Cheating – If a student is caught cheating, he/she will receive a
zero on that assignment. This goes for all persons involved. Allowing
someone to copy from you is the same as cheating. This refers to homework,
too. Remember, we are all held accountable for our choices.
10.Grooming – Please take care of this before or after class. I think
you look wonderful just the way you are!!
11.Class dismissal – Neither the bell nor the clock dismisses you. When
teaching and instruction are completed, the Teacher will dismiss the class.
Otherwise, keep book, notes, handouts, etc. open until you are dismissed.
