Mission Statement

Students will be given the opportunity to love science.

Program Objectives

As your teacher Mr. C has the following objectives for all his students who take this course:

1.        Mr. C wants everyone to have a better understanding of science and technology,

2.        Mr. C wants to convey his love for science,

3.        Mr. C wants to prepare all of his students well enough that they are prepared to take AP physics.

4.        Mr. C wants to encourage students to take more science courses than the minimum requirements for graduation,

5.    Mr. C wants to prepare students for courses in physics in college.
6.    Mr. C expects all students to be commended on the TAKS.

Grading

1.  Grades will come from labs, daily work, quizzes, tests and projects.  Below is the weight placed on each type of assignment:

            Labs                  25 %

            Quizzes  *                        25 %

            Tests and Projects        50 %

* Typically homework will not be graded.  Rather, students will be quizzed over the homework. Also, occasionally homework is allowed to be used on a quiz.  Daily work will accumulate to count for quiz grades.  For example, five daily grades worth 20 points each will add up for one quiz grade.

2. Students can complete make up work for excused absences.  No late work is accepted for projects.  Labs and daily grades cannot be made up for unexcused absences.    Labs and daily grades that are missed because of an excused absence must be scheduled the first day that the student returns to class.

3.  There will only be two tests per six weeks, a three week test and a six week test.  Both are accumulative as to their content.  Students who fail a test or project can retest.  Below are the criteria for a retest:

a.       It is pass/fail.

b.      The higher of the two grades will be posted.  However, the highest grade possible for a retest is 70.  Therefore, if a student takes a test and makes a 62 and retests and makes an 80.  The grade posted will be 70.

c.      The new test can be in any format that Mr. C chooses.

d.      The student must schedule the make up with Mr. C at a time other than class time.  It is the student's responsibility to schedule the make up.

Content

The daily schedule can be found on Mr. C’s website.  Click on the Physics calendar icon.
Also, the scope and sequence is the best place to determine what content is expected.  The scope and sequence can be found under the physics documents icon.

First semester:

Chapters 1-15

Second Semester:

            Chapters 16-31

 This is subject to change.

Tutoring Schedule

Rules

1.        Both the student and the teacher must show respect for each other.   Classroom rules will be discussed in class.

2.    All lab warnings/directions must be followed.  There are no exceptions.  Safety is a top priority.   The student may not participate in the lab until the safety contract is signed by the student and his or her guardian.
3.    If a student is tardy and a quiz has begun, the student will receive no credit for that quiz.

4.    Disruptive students may lose some or all of the following privileges:  Lab experiences, and/or group work, etc.

5.        MP3 players and calculator use is at the discretion of Mr. C.

6.    Telephones must be turned off and put away.  Mr. C begins taking them up on day 2.  Communication devices, cameras, and games are not allowed.  If a phone inadvertently rings, the student may get 1 warning before it is confiscated.  The warning will depend upon how cooperative the student has been previously.
7.   Water, juice, fruits, and vegetables (tacos/pizza 3rd period) are the only drinks and food
allowed.  However, that privilege may be revoked if the classroom becomes messy.  No food or drinks are allowed in the lab area.

a.       textbook

b.      notebook

c.       pen/pencil

d.      calculator

9.    The student must abide by any and all school rules (found in the student handbook).
10.  Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated.  The consequences of cheating or helping others cheat will be severe which can include but is not limited to a zero for the assignment/lab/quiz/lab, removal from the classroom in the form of detention or ISS, and/or removal from the honors program.
