Why do I have to keep a journal in a theater class?
Journaling is a great way to put feelings down on paper to use as a
resource
in your acting. You are exploring different aspects of your personality in
order to develop your own identity and to create characters. Plus, you
are
writing which helps you to develop ideas for original scripts.
--------------------------------------
What if I am absent during a 'Performance' assignment?
If you are absent on a day where you were scheduled to perform in
class
(whether individually, with a partner, or with a group), I ask that you be
ready to go with your performance on the day that you come back to
school.
You will be graded for it on that first day back.
--------------------------------------
What are the Classroom Rules?
1. No gum, food, or drink at any time.
2. Be in your seat, quiet, and working when the bell rings.
3. Respect the speaker, performances of others, teacher, and fellow
classmates.
4. All materials to class all the time.
5. Raise your hand before speaking or leaving your seat.
6. Keep it clean (room and performances).
7. The teacher dismisses the class.
--------------------------------------
What are the Classroom Procedures?
* When the bell rings, please be in your seat and quietly working on the
assignment on the board.
* If you see Mrs. Chapman with her hand raised in the air, please stop
what
you are doing, make eye contact, and silently pay attention.
* If you are performing and you hear Mrs. Chapman say “Freeze!”, please
freeze and silently wait for direction.
* Be responsible and use the restroom pass to quietly go to the
restroom and
come right back. Please do not go the to restroom without the pass.
Please
do not abuse this policy.
* Be responsible and use the “dress” pass to change into a costume.
No more
than five students may go to change at a time.
* Please ask permission, by raising your hand, to use the Hall Pass if
needed.
* If you are absent on a day that you (and your group or scene partner)
were
scheduled to perform, please be ready to go with that performance on
the day
that you return to school.

What classroom materials will I need for Mrs. Chapman's Theatre Class?
1 70 pg Spiral Notebook “Journal”
1 2-pocket Folder to hold hand-outs (or your journal may have pockets
inside of it)
1 Pen or Pencil
Austin Academy Assignment Spiral or your own Class Planner
For Theatrical Workshop:
The above plus-
A Small Black Binder (found at Wal-Mart or Office Depot)
1 small one-hole punch
a pair of scissors
a timer
*You may want to have extra notebook paper for writing scripts, or you
may use paper from your spiral notebook*
--------------------------------------
I'm on the Theatre Team, why can't I use just a regular sized black binder?
Tournament Rules require competitors to use a small black binder in these
events: Reader's Theatre, Poetry, and Prose. It is also a good way to keep
all of your tournament pieces together. I do a "binder check" every 6 weeks.
--------------------------------------
What if I didn't turn in a homework assignment?
Please get the completed assignment to me ASAP!
Homework is 25% of your grade, so let's try to avoid having any zeros on
homework!
--------------------------------------
Am I graded on class participation?
Yes! Every Six Weeks, there will be one "Class Participation" grade. It
will be listed under a "Daily Work" category which is 25% of your grade.
Here's a Percentage Listing:
Homework 25%
Daily Work 25%
Journal 25%
Performances/Tests or Quizzes 25%
--------------------------------------
Am I allowed to chew gum in Mrs. Chapman's classroom?
NO! If you have gum in your mouth, you cannot speak clearly. It is
important for an actor to be understood. Do not even bring gum into the
classroom, you will be asked to take it out of your mouth and throw it
away. If you are asked repeatedly (three or more times) to remove gum
from your mouth, you will receive a discipline essay. If you do not turn in
the discipline essay within 24 hours, you will receive a detention. If you
perform with gum in
your mouth, points will be deducted from your grade.
--------------------------------------
Do you have to audition to take Theatre B?
No, if you have taken Theatre 6-A, you may sign up for
Theatre 6-B. If you have taken Theatre 7,8-A, you may sign up for
Theatre 7,8-B. *Note: If you took just Theatre 6-A, you can sign up to take
Theatre 7/8-B your 7th grade year*
--------------------------------------
How do I become part of the Austin Academy Theatre Team?
Auditions are held in May for the following year for the Advanced Theatre
Class. The Theatrical Workshop class will prepare you to perform at
Speech Tournaments. Theatrical Workshop is open to 7th and 8th
Graders only. In the Spring, 6th and 7th grade Theatre Students are allowed
to attend and compete at some Theatre Tournaments. If you win a trophy
(1st,
2nd, or 3rd Place)at tournament, you are automatically eligible to take
Theatrical Workshop.
--------------------------------------
When are auditions for the Theatre Team?
6th and 7th Graders can audition for the Competitive Theatre Team in
May. The exact date will be posted. A 2-minute memorized
monologue of your choice, comedic or dramatic in nature, or a 2-5 minute
solo lip sync, 2-5 minute solo pantomime, 2-5 minute vocal, or 2-5 minute
storytelling is required to audition. You must have a costume for Lip Sync
and Vocal. If you make the team, you will take the Theatrical Workshop Class.
