My child says that (s)he doesn't have homework tonight. Is that true?

Probably not. Students will have assigned homework Monday -
Thursday nights. It may be that your child finished the
assignment in class. Ask to see the assignment & go over it with
your child. 5th Graders are also assigned independent reading
for a minimum of 20 minutes each night ... hopefully more!
They're reading to meet an AR goal each quarter. Some
children may need to read A LOT MORE than 20 minutes a night if
they're not making sufficient progress towards reaching their
goals. Three weeks into the grading period, students should've
earned one-third of the points toward their AR goals ... six
weeks into the grading period, students should've earned two-
thirds of the points toward their AR goals ... then they should
be right on track towards meeting their goals, without having to
cram at the end of the quarter. Read! Read!! Read!!!
