PROGRAM MISSION
"The Texas Bluebonnet Award (TBA) reading
program was established in 1979 to encourage Texas children to read more
books, explore a variety of current books, develop powers of discrimination,
and identify their favorite books. The award process provides librarians,
teachers, parents, and writers with insight into young students' reading
preferences. It further affords an opportunity to honor and encourage
imaginative authors who create books with high appeal to children."
--official statement from the Texas Library Association
Each year, the state committee selects
twenty of the best books reviewed for third- through sixth-grade students.
The program requires students to read five of the twenty to be eligible for
January's state election where kids vote for the book they liked the best.
The winning book will be chosen by the kids of Texas to be the 2009 Bluebonnet
Book and the author will receive the award at April's Texas Library
Association convention.
JOINING BLEDSOE'S BLUEBONNET CLUB
At Bledsoe, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade
students are encouraged to join the Bluebonnet Club.
To be a member, a student must:
1. Read five of
this year's nominee books.
2. Fill out a Bluebonnet Buzz report
for each of the five books.
(the report form may be picked up in
the library or printed from the "
Downloadable Forms" page on this website)
3. Turn in the reports to either the
classroom teacher or library staff.
The library staff will keep a running
tally of the students' progress. Each month, October to December, classroom
teachers will receive an update of their class progress. In December the
class that has read the most books will receive a prize!!! In January,
teachers will receive weekly reports until the deadline. This year, the
deadline to have all reports turned in to library staff is Friday,
January 22nd at 3:15pm. All students who read at least five books
will receive a voting ballot and be entered into a drawing for a prize.
Since these books are reviewed for such
a wide range of student levels of ability and maturity, students are
encouraged to read only those books that appeal to them. For this reason, no
prizes will be given for reading more than five books.
THE PERKS
Students will be Bluebonnet Club members
as soon as they have turned in their five reports, but the real fun begins
when all the reports are officially due. On Tuesday and Wednesday, January
26th and 27th, Bluebonnet Club members will visit the library during the
school day to vote for their favorite of the nominee books. Our school winner
will be announced on Thursday January 28th.
It takes a little bit of time to calculate
all the state votes, but the winner is generally announced in early February.
When the winner is announced, we will set a date for the Bluebonnet Club
party. The party theme will be determined by the theme of the winning book.
At the party, Club members will receive a certificate, goody bags, eat snacks,
listen to music, and win an opportunity to be the first to check out the 10/11
nominees.
The nominee list and Bluebonnet Buzz Forms
available in the library and on the library website. The books themselves
are available in our library, the public library, and in book stores. Check
the library website for updates regarding the program.
