AR Steps

Accelerated Reader (AR) is an incentive based program to promote reading
comprehension.

Students can earn points after completing each online test. These points help
your child earn dog tags. For every 10 points your child earns they will be
issued a dog tag. There is even a 100 point party at the end of the year for
those students who earn 100 points or higher!
There are several ways to identify an AR book. If the book is from the CRE
library it will have a yellow dot on the spin. Inside there will be a white
sticker that indicates the book level and available points.
For example the white sticker will look like this:

Henry and Mudge: The First Book (Title)
Cynthia Rylant (Author)
AR B.L. 2.7 (this indicates the reading level, middle of second grade)
Points: 0.5 ((this is the point value, the will only receive the full value
if they get a 100%)

The reading level is easy to identify, the first number indicates the grade,
and the second number indicates the beginning, middle, or end of the year.
For example: 4.2, would indicate Beginning of Fourth Grade. It is very
important that your child test on or around their reading level in order to
be a successful AR tester.
If the book is not from the CRE library you can identity it by going to the
following link to check to see if an AR test is available:

Your child will have opportunities at school to take AR tests. They can also
test from home by using the following steps:
1.Go to the CRE website, http://schools.roundrockisd.org/cactusranch/
2.Click on the Library tab
3.Click AR
4.Click Student
5.Your child will enter their username and password.
            Username: 132lastnamefirstinitial
Password: six-digit number followed by the letter a

6.Click on Take a Quiz
7.Click on the Yellow Pencil RP, Take a Reading Practice Quiz (this is
the only quiz they will take. Vocabulary quizzes cannot earn points)
8.They can search by Title or Author (they must only search by one not both)
9.Once a book is selected it will ask you, Are you sure you want to
take this quiz? (Please verify book title and author before hitting yes)
10.Once you hit yes the quiz will begin, your child will need to read
the questions and select A, B, C, or D, and then hit next.
11.Your child may use the book to help them while taking the quiz!

Happy testing! Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Third Grade does not take a grade on AR, however we do encourage that you and
your child set an attainable goal for the end of the year. I encourage that
every student earn at least 20 AR points per a nine weeks.
