5th Grade TAG Language Arts
In 5th Grade TAG language arts:
This year the students will be reading historical fiction and nonfiction throughout the year to coorelate with the 5th grade social studies TEKS.
Each student will create an ongoing portfolio to display their work and projects for each time period that we study.
I will be integrating writing and reading TEKS into their study of the history of the United States.
Our first project is called "Callison Airlines, Come Fly With Us!" The students will be documenting their travel to every region in our country through a daily writing journal and researching the natural resources and culture of each region. They will then complete culminating projects that coorelate with their travels.
They will have some time to work on this project in class, but will be expected to finish a majority of the project at home. They have been given a grading rubric for this project. The project is due September 20th.
In the first nine weeks we will cover the following topics:
Reading Genres
Elements of Poetry
Cause and Effect by comparing and contrasting how different texts are structured.
Inferencing nonfiction literature.
Making connections across multiple varieties of genres.
United States Geography
Revolutionary War Period
Ongoing:
Writing Process: (planning, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing)
Convections: Using appropriate punctuation and capitalization.
Vocabulary/Spelling
The students first novels in TAG LA are "The Year of the Hangman" by Gary Blackwood and "My Brother Sam Is Dead" by James Lincoln Collier.
