Homework

Kindergarten homework will consist of a monthly project and reading log. 

Here is a list of suggestions for having fun and learning together. 

Math
Count to an adult (forwards and backwards). How high can you count? Practice writing the number.
Draw a repeating pattern.
Have an adult say a number (0-20) and you name the number that comes right before and right after 
it.
Continue to practice positional/directional words (ex: near, above, behind, below, beside, etc.). Use 
two objects to show the positions.
Count all the steps (windows, chairs, etc.) in your house.
Sort blocks by color, shape and size.
Go on a Shape Hunt outside.
Find numbers in magazines and on street signs

Science
Mix paints or colored water to make new colors
Experiment with mirrors
Play with bubbles
Go on a leaf or rock hunt

Social Studies
Look at family photos
Find magazine pictures of people showing various emotions
Make a map of your house or neighborhood together
Talk about the importance of rules for keeping people safe

Oral Language Development
Play I Spy - describe objects you see in the room
Sing songs while riding in the car
Make stick puppets and tell a story
Visit the library and let your child pick out some books

Writing  
Practice writing your first and last name with capital letters at the beginning and lowercase letters 
throughout.
Write 5 rhyming words for: big, cat, dog, and cake. Nonsense words are okay.
Practice drawing a picture and writing a sentence to match. Be sure to put a capital letter at the 
beginning, spaces between your words, and an ending mark. Point out where you see a word, letter, 
and sentence.

Reading
Have an adult read the sight words to you. Repeat the words after them and practice spelling them. 
 Sight Words are: at, an, and, am, can, do, go, he, in, is, it, like, me, my, no, see, so, the, to, up, we
      child's first and last name
Read your Guided Reading book or a favorite book from home to your pet and/or a stuffed animal. 
Siblings and relatives are also great listeners!

Listening/Speaking
Say the days of the week and the months of the year in order to an adult.
Have an adult dictate simple, 2 or 3 step directions for you to follow.
Recite your phone number and address.

Fine Motor Skills
Practice tying your shoe.
Practice stringing beads.
Practice the correct formation of upper and lowercase letters.

The most important things to do? Spend time together, go places and talk about those experiences. 
Read to your child and play simple games.
