BAND EXPECTATIONS
All 6th, 7th and 8th grade bands at Canyon Vista Middle School are
open to students by audition. Instrumentation needs of the
ensemble, student attitude, conduct and existing openings in the
band determine membership.
Student Expectations:
1. The student is expected to be on time, in his/her
seat, and have all materials---instrument, music, pencil, tuner,
reeds, valve oil, etc---ready to begin class when the director is
ready.
2. The student is expected to be courteous and respect
others rights, property and feelings.
3. The student is expected to not touch any instrument
but his/her own. Students will be held responsible for any damage
they do to anothers instrument.
4. The student is expected to contribute to and
participate in the band class in a positive manner.
5. The student is responsible for completing all
assignments.
6. The student is expected to respond to any adult
request respectfully.
7. The student is expected to participate in all appropriate
performances.
8. Members of the Honors and Select Symphonic Bands are
required to audition for the All District Band.
Consequences:
1. Detentions may be assigned for failure to meet these
expectations. A student who engages in persistent infractions will
be referred to an assistant principal.
2. Band is a performing class and the absence or
negative contribution of even one member can greatly affect the
group as a whole. Each member must pull his/her own weight.
Students affect every member of the group with each action, and for
this reason the Texas Education Agency has stipulated that behavior,
self-discipline, and responsibility are essential elements and must
be graded accordingly. Students who repeatedly cause disruptions or
fail to meet obligations may have their grade adversely affected.
Chronic disruptions may result in the student being removed from the
group.
Concerts:
The Round Rock ISD and the Texas Education Agency have
determined that band is a performing art and that performances are
an extension of class time. The student is required to attend all
performances. Unexcused absences from any performance will be
considered a zero on a major exam.
Concert Dress:
The concert is a special occasion. Each student is
responsible to wear the band uniform. The concert uniform for band
students is a white, short or long sleeved button down shirt, black
pants or black skirt, and black shoes. Boys should wear black socks
and girls should wear neutral or black hose. Sixth grade students
will wear jeans and a band t-shirt for two of their three
performances, and so will need to purchase a band shirt. Financial
assistance is available.
The following are inappropriate attire for concerts:
 Polo-style or T-shirts
 Blue jeans
White, colored or multi-colored tennis shoes
 Shorts of any kind
Students who do not wear appropriate concert attire may face any or
all of the following consequences:
 Parental contact
 Community service assignments
 Exclusion from the performance
Students who may require financial assistance to obtain a uniform
should contact their band director at the start of the school year.
No Pass/No Play:
Current law does not allow students to participate in extra-
curricular activities outside of the classroom unless they are
passing all subjects. Therefore, it is imperative that all members
remain eligible. Tutoring is available for students needing help.
Note: Ineligible students are allowed to participate in local
concerts because these concerts are an extension of the class.
Ineligible students are not allowed to participate in activities
away from the school, such as contests or trips.
Section Rehearsals:
All members will at times be required to attend section
rehearsals outside of the regular school day. During the Fall
students will work on District Music and during the Spring they will
concentrate on UIL music. Members of the Symphonic and Honors Band
are required to audition for the All-District Band. Failure to
attend sectionals and audition may affect a students grade and/or
band placement.
Grading:
All band members are evaluated using a three part grading system.
The first part of the system allows us to evaluate the students
progress in the technical aspects of playing and caring for the
instrument and the amount of energy the students expends toward that
goal. The second part of the policy evaluates development of
necessary rehearsal skills such as responsibility, self-discipline,
self-control, and ensemble participation. The third part, a practice
record will be used to evaluate student's home practice and must be
signed by a parent or guardian each week.
We feel that the Canyon Vista band program has an outstanding record
and that this years students will carry on this fine tradition.
With your help we hope to make this the best year yet! If you have
any questions or concerns, please call the band hall: at 464-8191.
