Homework
-
Set aside 30 minutes each day for homework and a binder check
-
Do homework at the same place and, if possible, the same time each day
-
Have supplies available to your child. A good idea is a file box containing
paper, pencils, pens, map pencils etc.
-
If there is no homework, have your child do a binder check, read or study for
upcoming test
-
If your child has not written down any homework have them check the TeacherWeb
-
On Monday, print the agenda for the week from TeacherWeb for each class, this
can help you monitor that your child is writing down homework and tests.
Tutoring
If your child does not understand his/her homework or needs extra help with
schoolwork there are several options open to them:
-
Come to the Learning Center (room 331) before school at 7:50 or after school
on Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday from 3:45 until 4:15.
-
Check with his/her teacher for additional tutoring times
-
If further tutoring is needed, check with the counselors office for a list of
teachers that tutor outside of school
Organization
Organization is a huge part of being successful. Below are tips for ogranizing
binders, supplies and how you can help:
Binder:
A three-ring binder with accordion files in the front or a binder with
divider tabs are good options. Use the checklist to assist in organizing:
-
In the front, a copy of student schedule
-
A section or tab for each subject (some teachers have required sections or a
section for classwork in progress, completed work & tests/quizzes)
-
A section or tab for "Take Home" (homework/papers to be signed) & "Take to
school" or use a pocket folder in the front of binder labeled
"Take home" on the 1st side & "Take to school" on the 2nd side.
Zippered pencil bag or pouch in the binder:
Keep only the minimum supplies needed, keeping extras either at home or in
their locker. Use this checklist to assist:
-
2-3 sharpened pencils & eraser
-
2 black and red pens
-
glue stick & scissors
-
highlighter
How to assist in organizing:
-
Do a binder check with your child at least weekly
-
Encourage your child to do a binder check everyday day or two
-
Use the checklists above to assist with staying organized
Much of the information above comes from a book called, "The Organized
Student" by Donna Goldberg. If you feel your child needs more help with
organization this book has lots of information and "how to's" that can help
you work with your child to teach them how to get organized and stay organized.
