Mastery club

Mastery Club is a club for students who are interested in exploring
topics "above and beyond" the standard classroom curriculum. We want to
thank Mrs. Renz of Tom McCall Elementary School in Oregon for inspiring and
our Mastery Club. Without her hard work, we wouldn't have this opportunity.

    Choosing a Challenge
To participate, choose a challenge from your challenge notebook list, the
second grade lists in our hall, or on the website. You can pick and choose
from the challenges. They do not need to be studied in any specific order,
and you do not need to complete all of the challenges to be a STAR!
Completing a Challenge
Get a spiral notebook and staple the lists of challenges inside the front
cover. Write a checkmark for each challenge you complete and write the date
in the box. The challenges you turn in must be in your very best handwriting
and be organized and neat looking. You may not turn in pages printed directly
from the Internet or copied from a book. Avoid plagiarism by writing your
challenge information in your own words using your own writer’s VOICE. Work
must also be in your own handwriting, and you should be able to read/explain
your answers to me. Submit your internet research with your challenge. Be
ready to discuss your challenge in detail telling what you have learned, why
it was interesting, and how you found the information.

                        The Challenge Conference

Turn in your Mastery Club notebook to the Mastery Club area in your classroom
as soon as it is completed. Your teacher will then set up a time with you to
have a STAR Student-Teacher Conference. Be prepared to present your new
knowledge to your teacher. Your teacher will initial a challenge that you
have successfully completed.

Parent Permission and Signature
Always get your parent’s permission to use the internet before you begin a
challenge.
Each challenge that you turn in for credit, must have your parent’s initials
on the challenge sheet, written after the challenge topic. This shows they
knew you were working on the challenge and that you were not on the internet
without their permission.

Calculating Your Challenges

After four completed challenges, you will be awarded a "STAR" for the Mastery
Club and will then be added to the Mastery Club Hall of Fame! We will keep
track of the amount of challenges you complete. You may complete as many as
you like. Have fun! You'll receive certificates at the end of the year
awards ceremony based on STARs you have earned.

Mastery Club:
If your child is interested in participating in Mastery club, send in a spiral
notebook with your child’s name written on the top, right hand corner of the
front cover. Please write it in sharpie or make a label.
Have your child use the first page of the notebook to write his/her teacher a
note expressing an interest in Mastery Club.
We will then make a copy of the challenges and staple them inside the notebook.
