Fall independent study opportunity.
All identified GT students must do a fall and a spring independent study.
Everyone in second grade has the opportunity to do an independent study if
he/she
desires to do it. It will be for extra credit and will not affect their grade
if they choose not to do it. Four grades will be given: written report, oral
presentation, 2 projects
Dear Parents,
Attached is a form to guide your child in choosing an independent
study and a
guide to activities he or she might like to do. If your child would like to
participate, I suggest that the topic be kept rather narrow. For example:
‘Penguins’ rather than ‘Animals!’ Any topic your child is interested in and
would like to find out more about is fine. The topic should be about
something he/she does not really know much about yet. This is to be done at
home and can be a family project, though the activities should be “kid
produced!” When your child completes his/her project, he/she may bring it to
show the class . You will be invited to his/her presentation. This provides
an opportunity for your child to study something he/she chooses, and then the
child has the opportunity tell about it and show it to others, speaking to a
group and answering questions.
Have your child chose a subject and two of the activities on the grid
or any
project thing you might think of! The product’s grid will come home
separately as I do not have it to send online.
Again, this is strictly optional – meant to be a fun opportunity but
not to
bring more stress to busy schedules!!

Parent guided, kid produced!!
Independent Study Project
Beginning in October, second grade ACCEL students will start an
independent
study on a topic of personal interest. The topic of study should be
something that is of high interest to the student.
Parents are encouraged to help
students select an appropriate topic, but please do not do the work for them.
Your child WILL need your guidance to stay on schedule! It is important that
the topic be specific enough that the available information is not
overwhelming. Feel free to take your child to the public library or to use
other sources (internet, encyclopedia, interviews, etc.) to gather further
information.
Choose a topic that you are interested in but have not studied before
and
right now you don’t know very much about. You are just curious and want to
find out more.
The following is a list of steps in planning for the final
presentation:
1. Select a topic – Due October 26
2. Ask questions –Due November 2
3. Collect information
4. Develop two projects:November 16
Present the information in the form of two projects
Also due: A written report (this can be used for the oral presentation) and an
oral presentation: We will begin the week of November 30. You must make and
extra
copy of your written report that you can keep at home for practicing your oral
presentation. Your oral presentation should be smooth and fluent. It does
not have to be memorized, but it needs to be well practiced.
The final products should be something that displays what the student has
learned about the topic. In other words, the products/projects are not the
study. The written and oral report will explore the study.
I’ve designed this packet so that the last page is the first item to
be
turned in. It can be torn off and returned to school. The due dates are
important. The oral report can be written on a separate sheet of paper and
turned in with the projects.
Learning to meet a deadline is a practical skill that most people
need in
everyday life.
Please read through this information with your child. If you have any
questions, please let me know. I hope this will be a positive learning
experience.
You will be invited to watch your child give his/her presentation. I
will
send out a calendar letting you know a couple weeks ahead of the
presentations.
