SECOND GRADE HANDBOOK
School Days
Our school day begins promptly at 8:00. It is important that the children are here and on
time. Students will be allowed into the building at 7:30. If your child is to eat breakfast in
the cafeteria, please have them at school by 7:30 to they will have time to finish eating before
the bell rings. Breakfast will stop being served at 7:50. Anyone arriving after 8:00 will be
counted tardy and anyone arriving after 10:00 will be counted absent.
Student Absence:
Whenever your child is absent from school please send a note regarding the absence on the first
day of his/her return to school. Please send a note after each absence. You can email your
note to melide@mansfieldisd.org. Please copy to the classroom teacher.
School Tardy Policy:
A student is considered tardy when they enter the classroom after 8:00 a.m.
Each group of 3 tardies will count for 1 absence for award purposes, not for attendance records.
Dismissal:
Our school day ends at 3:15. If you need to take your child out before then you must sign
him/her out through the office. The office will then call to the room to dismiss the student.
If your child is to go home by a different method than usual please send a note to school with
your child. If it is a last minute change please call the office. When you call the office
make sure they realize it is a last minute change so that your child will be notified before
dismissal. I cannot send a child with others just by their word. ALL children being picked up
by car or walking will be dismissed from the pick-up area at the back of the school. This is
important for your child’s safety.
Changes in personal information: If your phone numbers, home and cell, address, or email
address changes, please let the classroom teacher know as well as notifying the office.

Visiting the Classroom
Parents are always welcome to visit the classroom, but we must remember that the children are
here to learn. In order to keep the classroom running smoothly, the following rules will be in
place at all times:
1.All visitors must sign in at the office with a valid driver’s license. Once signed in, you
will receive a Visitors sticker that will identify you while on the school campus. This is a
school wide rule that is for the safety of all of the children.
2.Please save discussions about your child for the teacher’s conference time (9:05-10:05 daily),
before school, or after school. It is important that all of our attention be focused on the
children from 8:00 - 3:15.
3.Don't be surprised if we put you to work. You may be asked to listen to a child read, work
with a group of students, sort papers, file papers, read to the class, etc.
We love to have volunteers in our classroom and always welcome you, but remember that these
rules are in place for the benefit of all children. The less distraction we have in the
classroom, the more learning time there is for the children.
***Please contact your child’s teacher if you or someone you know has experience in a subject
area we are studying. We always enjoy having special guest speakers.
Classroom Rules and Discipline Policy
Classroom Rules
1.Be in your assigned seat and ready to work when the door is closed.
2.Have paper, pencils, books and all needed supplies everyday

5.Listen to and follow all directions and instructions
6.Talking only at appropriate times

Consequences
If a student chooses to break a rule;
Verbal Warning
1st time-Second Warning
2nd time-10 minute time out during recess
3rd time-15 minute time out during recess
4th time-notification of parents and loss of entire recess
5th time-Office referral to principal’s office
Severe Clause**In the event of a severe disruption or behavior, the student will be sent to the
principal’s office.
Conduct Point System
This week and next week the students will be working hard to learn and follow classroom and
school rules. Each day your child will bring home a daily behavior report on his or her
homework sheet. Please sign this each day. Your child deserves the most positive educational
climate possible for academic growth. Therefore, the plan listed below will be in effect at all
times.
The number of conduct marks the child has had deducted will determine the citizenship grade for
the six weeks. The grading system is used with the classroom discipline policy. Each student
will begin every six weeks with a grade of 100. Each time a conduct mark is received; one point
is taken from their citizenship grade. For example, if a student has 5 conduct marks in 6
weeks, the grade will be a 95. This scale will be used to determine citizenship grades.
100-95 = E
94-90 = S
89-80 = N
79-below = U
***The first verbal warning will not deduct a point from his/her grade. The warning will be
documented in your child’s daily folder with a circled W. WARNINGS WILL NOT DEDUCT POINTS FROM
YOUR CHILD’S GRADE!
Severe clause: An office referral will result in a 5 point deduction.
Student Responsibilities
One of the most important things we as parents and teachers can teach our children is
responsibility. Some things we feel second graders can be responsible for are listed below:
Homework
Homework is to be completed and returned the next day. Homework gives children the opportunity
to practice the work we have learned in the class on their own. When your child is doing their
homework at night encourage them to figure out the answers on their own. Check over their work
and encourage them to double-check their answers. If you see several wrong answers ask them how
they got that answer, and then guide them toward the right one. Look for homework every Monday,
Tuesday and Thursday except during a holiday week or when special events may happen.
Math Facts: Each child is expected to memorize all of their addition and subtraction facts by
October 1. Please buy or make your child flash cards for both. They are usually available at
the Dollar Tree. Practice daily. Your child will be taking timed practice tests in the
classroom. We will send home a blank test of each for you to take and get copied to practice at
home.
Read:
We encourage reading at home every night. We have found that reading daily greatly improves a
child’s reading ability and it helps to develop a love for reading. Please help us by having
your child read to you or listen to you read to them. You will be amazed at how they love to
read with you. This gives them the opportunity to share something with you. Ask questions as
your child reads and then have them retell you the story in their own words.
Conduct sheets
Conduct sheets: Please keep the conduct sheet in the left side pocket of the folder.
Please check this folder daily. The conduct sheets, important notes, homework, notes from the
office, and graded papers will be in this folder. Please return the signed daily sheet and any
homework. Please take out all graded papers and empty the folder daily. Also, be sure and
empty the backpack daily.
Grading Policy: Students have three days to complete an assignment, after three days a zero
will be given. If a student makes below a 50, he/she can raise his/ her grade to a 50 after
making corrections. The paper must be returned the next day. Grades are posted online. We
will be sending you information about accessing your student’s grades.
