Dear Students and Parents,

Welcome to Mrs. Matheny’s second grade class! I am so excited to
have you in my class this year. I wanted to let you know a little bit about
me and the school year.
I was raised in Irvine, California with my parents and older sister.
Although I loved going to the beach, I also enjoyed sports, music, and
drama. I attended The University of Arizona where I earned my degree and
teaching certificate. I married soon after and my husband, Keeth, has led us
on a great adventure with his football coaching career. He is now the
Offensive Coordinator for Austin High School’s football team where he will
also teach. We are thrilled to be in Austin after stops in Arizona,
Missouri, Wichita Falls, TX and Kentucky. We have a ten year old son,
Truman, who is in fifth grade here at Clayton and a seven year old
daughter, Carter Rose, who is in first grade here too. When I am not
attending football games I enjoy movies, walking, bunko, and playing with the
kids.
I focus on the positive and try to reward children for excellent work
or behavior. Our classroom environment will be one of discovery, learning,
and compassion. I have taught for twelve years and have established ways to
help children feel proud of their learning. Children may get ‘caught’ by
the ‘good behavior spy’ who awards certificates at the end of the day to
children who made good choices. They might also have a friend write them
a ‘Pat on the Back’ note for something well done. Children can earn Clayto
Cash or Above and Beyond Awards to trade in for bigger prizes too. There are
so many wonderful programs I can’t wait to share with my students.
I am looking forward to getting to know you all! I love to play games
and share writing and stories with my students. We will have opportunities
for families to join us as we work as a team to have a great year together.

							Love,

							Cory Matheny
