Music Curriculum

You may read the TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) for elementary
music at the link provided on the "Links Page" of this web site.

During the school year our kindergarteners will practice and learn about
the basic concepts of music (fast/slow, loud/soft, high/low, long/short) and
learn songs that correlate to their classroom studies. We will share our
music with our families at our concert in the spring.

First graders will work on rhythms learning the quarter note (ta), quarter
rest, and eighth notes (ta-di) as well as review the basic music concepts
learned in kindergarten. This year they will also learn to read the
notes "so", "mi", and "la" on the staff.

Second graders will review the pitches "so", "mi", and "la".
They will also review quarter notes and rests and eighth notes. They will
also add "do", "re", and half notes to their reading repetoire.

Third graders will review the pitches "do", "re", "mi", "so", and "la", which
are the notes of the pentatonic scale. We will learn about new pitches "low
la" and "low so" and new rhythms, sixteenth notes. We will continue to
practice reading our other rhythms such as quarter notes and rests, eighth
notes, and half and whole notes and rests.

Fourth graders will review the pentatonic scale and learn the notes "fa"
and "ti". We will continue to work on all rhythms previously learned,
including sixteenth notes and syncopation patterns. We will also work more
on learning the absolute pitch note names (A,B,C,D,E,F,G).

Fifth graders will learn to play their recorders and continue practicing
reading the absolute pitch notes in the treble clef.

There are several performances scheduled for this year. You can see the
dates on the calendar page of this website. All students will also learn
music history and instruments of the orchestra, work on movement, and learn
about multicultural music this year. It's going to be another great year.
