Teaching children how to read is such a joy! When I was hired to teach
Reading Recovery at Deep Wood, I felt as if I had won the lottery! I get to
do what I love most with the children in my neighborhood. I have known some
Deep Wood students since they were babies and it is wonderful being able to
watch them grow and learn on a daily basis.
I grew up in Amarillo and went to Texas Tech University in Lubbock. After
swallowing a lot of dust, I moved to Austin to get a Master's Degree at The
University of Texas. I taught kindergarten for 17 years and trained to be a
Reading Recovery teacher in 1998. I came to Deep Wood in 2001 and I love it
here because this is my neighborhood school. My son, Hayden, is a 7th
grader at Chisholm Trail Middle School and my daughter, Lauren, is a
sophomore at Round Rock High School. They are both former Deep Wood Dinos.
My husband Roger works for the Texas Department of
Transportation where he designs bridges. We have a cat named Holle and a
dog named Co-Co.
My goal for every student I work with is to teach them how to become
independent problem solvers. If my students no longer need my help, then I
have accomplished my goal. I also want them to love to read and to write.
