Board seeks feedback on renaming Athletic Complex   January 26, 2010 - Round Rock ISD Board of Trustees are seeking community input regarding renaming the Round Rock ISD Athletic Complex after Kelly Reeves, a former RRISD teacher, coach and athletic director. Reeves passed away in Nov. 2009 after a battle with cancer.
The community is asked to provide feedback via an online form on the district's Web site www.roundrockisd.org or by e-mailing community_relations@roundrockisd. org. Individuals may also mail letters to the district's Administration Office,  Attn: Community Relations Department, 1311 Round Rock Ave., Round Rock, TX 78681. Input will be collected online through Wednesday, Feb. 10.  Trustees will receive a summary of the community feedback and make a decision to rename the facility the "Kelly Reeves Athletic Complex" during the regular school board meeting on Feb. 18 held in the RRHS Lecture Hall at 7:30 p.m. Community members may also sign-up to speak regarding the renaming of the Athletic Complex during the meeting.
Reeves served as the first head football coach at Westwood High School from 1981 through 1989 when he was named the district's Athletic Director. He held the position of AD until his retirement in 2005. During his time at RRISD, Reeves implemented artificial turf at Dragon Stadium which decreased the wear and tear on the field which had caused student injuries and limited field use to other student organizations such as marching bands.
With the opening of McNeil High School and Stony Point High School, Reeves conducted a study to construct a separate athletic complex and requested it be added to the 1999 Bond Election. He proposed a concrete stadium with artificial turf which would not only provide relief at Dragon Stadium, but would also help with future middle schools as it would allow the district to build practice fields at future middle schools and allow middle school athletes to play games at the complex. Doing so saved the district money on providing lighting, concession stands, public restrooms and seating. Reeves served on the design committee for the Athletic Complex and was there from the initial concept through when the first game was played.
Reeves has been honored by his peers around the state and was named the 1996 Athletic Director of the Year, the 1998 State Award of Merit from the Texas High School Athletic Director's Association, elected to the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association Board of Directors (NIAAA) in 1998, and was elected to the Hall of Honor in 2000 by the Texas High School Athletic Director Association.
