Milky Way Parents,

As you may have seen in the Thursday folders we are really focusing on reading comprehension.  Please go over the reading passages and questions with your child.  Remember the reading requirement for third grade has increased from 100 minutes of reading per week to 150 minutes per week. You can help your child by listening to them read aloud and asking them comprehension questions about what they are reading. Our expectation is that they will be using all their reading strategies in their practice reading passages. Review Thursday folder work to get an idea of your child's strengths and areas of growth. If they received below a 70%, they may correct it for a 70%. It would be helpful to review all work even if it is not for a grade.

There are some updates on the website. The spelling link now has the spelling lists for the next two nine weeks. The science link has the vocabulary words and some science links. The math link has some links to sites that can help student practice their math concepts. In addition, the handout link will have a copy of all the handouts.

In Language Arts this week, we are continuing our poetry unit. This week we will be learning about how to write a Haiku, Cinquain, Acrostic, and Bio Poem. Daily we are reviewing and looking at the nouns, verbs, and adjectives in poetry. We are also reviewing onomatopoeias, synonyms, homonyms, and antonyms.

In Math, we are beginning problem solving.  We will be working on different strategies to solve word problems. Please review the concepts with your child and go over any missed work in their Thursday folder. Keep working on the multiplication and division fact families. Encourage your child to use all their strategies in problem solving and show all their work.

In Science and Social Studies, we will begin learning about renewable and non-renewable resources. We have some fun experiments to do as we get familiar with these resources. We will also be doing our class science fair project. Remember that the Science Fair and Math Night is on Friday.

Have a great week!
